A. Listen. What does Aidan, an emergency dispatcher, do on a typical
emergency call? Put the steps in order. [CD Track 37]
[CD Track 38]
Announcer: Good afternoon. This is Sylvia Rodriguez, and I’m sitting
here with Aidan Marsh at the emergency call center. We’re
going to learn about what it’s like for an emergency dispatcher,
which is what Mr. Marsh has been doing for...
Aidan: Seven years... and... I’m proud to say I’ve never missed a day
of work.
Announcer: Seven years... You’re a real veteran, then.
Aidan: I guess you could say that... not everyone is cut out for this job,
you know.... If you can’t handle the fast pace, you won’t last
very long around here.
Announcer: What’s a typical call like? I mean, can you walk us through
what you do when a call comes in?
Aidan: OK, um... let’s say a call has just come in. I answer it, get the
person’s name, and I evaluate the situation... I need to
determine if it’s really an emergency situation or not...
Announcer: And if it is an emergency?
Aidan: The next step is to get the exact location of the caller so I can
dispatch help... an ambulance, the police, whatever is needed.
Announcer: OK... so, you decide if it’s an emergency, you find out
where the caller is, and then you send help. What next?
Aidan: Hmm... I get the caller’s phone—telephone—number. We need
to write it down in case we get cut off, it also helps us to locate
someone sometimes, especially with cell phones....
Announcer: And after that...? Are you basically done?
Aidan: Oh no. Next—I get more information. I don’t do an in—depth
analysis of the situation. I just need to get the basics. We keep
a list of questions on hand... to use to gather and relay
information to the folks on the scene who will use the
information we provide to determine the extent of the person’s

injuries and go from there.... Then the last thing I do is stay on
the line with the person until help arrives.
Announcer: Well, we have a little bit of time... how about if we listen
to an emergency call that you’ve taken. Can you set this up for
our listeners?
Aidan: Sure. Yeah, of course.... This was a call from a 14-year-old girl
whose friend was injured in a Soccer game.
Announcer: OK, let’s listen.
Aidan: Emergency.
Gretchen: Oh, gosh, hi... I need your help...
Aidan: OK, what’s going on?
Gretchen: Susie—my friend, Susie... she’s injured. I don’t know—we
were playing soccer and she slipped... it’s terrible—it’s her
leg...
Aidan: OK, first, what’s your name?
Gretchen: Gretchen, Gretchen Smith.
Aidan: All right, Gretchen, where are you located?
Gretchen: We’re on Spencer Field—you know, behind the high school...
it’s the middle field.
Aidan: Got it. OK, I’m sending an ambulance right now.... What’s your
phone number in case we get disconnected?
Gretchen: It’s 555—1265.
Aidan: Great. OK, while the ambulance is on its way, I’m going to ask
you some questions all right? You’re doing great.
Gretchen: OK.
Aidan: OK, Gretchen, has Susie lost consciousness at any time?
Gretchen: No.
Aidan: And you said it’s her leg? Right or left?
Gretchen: Her right leg. She’s in a lot of pain.... I don’t know what to
do...
Aidan: Don’t do anything.... Stay with your friend. It’s essential that
you don’t move her. The ambulance should be there in about
four minutes....
Announcer: So, what happened?
Aidan: Well, you heard the call: Gretchen said that Susie was in pain
and had hurt her right leg.... The ambulance arrived just after

that.
Announcer: We don’t have much time.... Can you play one more
call—you know, something brief?
Aidan: OK. Um... OK... Here’s a call... that shows you not all of our
situations are so serious....
Aidan: Emergency.
Tony: Hello? Hello? Oh, thank goodness you answered!
Aidan: What’s happening, Sir?
Tony: Well, we’re under attack—it’s terrible. We need to evacuate the
building!
Aidan: Who is attacking you?
Tony: A big bird.... A big BLACK bird in the lobby of my apartment
building. The address is 265 C Street. You need to get here
right away!
Aidan: Sir, can I get your name?
Tony: Yeah, it’s Tony. Tony Barros.
Aidan: OK. Tony, let me get some details. Are you in the lobby right
now, sir?
Tony: No. I’m in my apartment on the third floor, and...
Aidan: Are you injured in any way?
Tony: No... But I need to get to work. I’ll be late.
Aidan: OK, sir, I understand your situation and I think I can help you...
Announcer: So what did you do?
Aidan: I told him to take the elevator down to the garage and leave
the building that way. I’m telling you this job is never dull!
B. Listen again. Complete the information about the two callers. Write
U if a piece of information is unknown.
