Course Syllabus
Course Description: This course is designed to provide the basic manipulative skills to
obtain a Massachusetts Cosmetology license. Maintain safety judgments, proper work
habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure. The student will apply the
knowledge and skills necessary, with an emphasis placed on the quality of the service
provided as well as, developing salon quality procedures.
Instructional Philosophy: Formal training includes classroom study, demonstrations,
and practical work. Students study basic beauty services which include; shampooing,
haircutting, hair coloring and styling. The student will be trained to advise clients how to
care for hair, straighten, or permanent wave hair or lighten or darken their hair color.
Additionally, the student will train to perform manicures, pedicures, advanced nail care,
scalp and facial treatments, makeup analysis and application, and clean and style wigs
and hairpieces. The student will practice proper safety and sanitation procedures to aid in
the prevention of the spread of contagious diseases, along with specific safety measures
to prevent the transmission of HIV and HBV. Students attend lectures on the use and care
of instruments, sanitation and hygiene, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and recognition
of simple skin and nail ailments. Assessment will involve a variety of strategies including
projects, portfolios, essays, MA State Board Regulations (ASI Rubric),
classroom rubrics, teacher assessment, peer assessment, and self assessment.
Course Goals:




Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
Practice effective communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming.
Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of scalp-treatment, scalp care,
shampooing/draping, finger waving horizontal and vertical, wet hairstyling
(advanced), thermal curling, blow drying, permanent wave (advanced techniques),
manicuring, pedicures, facial massage (advanced techniques), facial procedure
(manipulations, advanced techniques), facial makeup, hair shaping (advanced),
artistry styling, artificial eyelashes, eyebrow waxing. Straighten, or permanent
wave hair, and lighten or darken hair color.
Apply learned theory, technical information, and related matter to assure sound
judgments, decisions, and procedures.
Student & Classroom Expectations:

Prepared for class
Students will:
 Have a pencil or pen.
 Lab shoes
 Lab coat (Cosmetology supplies)
 3 ring binder (for hand-outs)

Participate
Students will:
 Demonstrate and take part in projects, journal entries, daily grading rubric,
and safety and sanitary precautions
 Maintain and develop your own portfolio
 Perform assigned bi-weekly clean-up assignment daily
 Complete all assignments
 Participate as a team member each day
 If work is not completed a grade of 40 will be given and you will NOT
earn a free day if one is scheduled
 Students will earn grades on timed lab techniques
 Students will be expected to read and write daily
 Present orally to the class, and work as a member of a team
 Students will not receive credit for classroom hours if not present
 Students will not receive hours if they don’t participate in class
 Attendance needs to be kept at acceptable level to achieve State of MA
requirements
 Follow the school and Cosmetology dress code and (see student hand
book)

Punctual
Students will:
 Be on time for class. Tardiness will result in a phone call home, with
repeated tardiness followed by after school assignment
 Maintain excellent attendance

Polite
Students will:
 Use appropriate language
 NO FOOD, GUM OR DRINK (JUST WATER) in the lab
 Treat your fellow classmates and teacher with respect
 NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES WILL BE USED IN THE LAB

A Mid-term exam will be given at the end of the second quarter; this involves the
performance of an assigned practical skill along with a written description of the skills
procedure, which will be averaged into the second quarter grade. A mocked state board
exam will be your final exam.
