Many students struggle to easily find information from their textbook, making
their job as a student much more difficult. The purpose of today’s activity is
to get you more familiar with your textbook (to help you track down
information), and how your text organizes that information, so that you can
be more successful using your text as a class resource. Now Let’s Begin The
Hunt…
THE BIG 3! When you need to find information quickly, and you have not
been given a specific page or chapter, the following three parts of the book
will be most important.
1. The Table of Contents:

b. How does it help you find information?
c. Does it provide specific information or general information and
an overview of how the book is organized? Explain

2. The Index:
a. Where is it?
b. How does it help you find information?
c. Does the index provide specific information, or general

3. The Glossary:
a. Where is it?
b. What information does the glossary provide you?

d. Does the definition make sense to you? (Be honest!)
4. Book Organization:
Go to chapter 2 on page 30.
Note how the chapter title is the OVERALL topic, and that it has
sections.
