Water, Landforms & People Exam Revision: Use pgs 20-39 & your classwork to fill in the gaps. Answer the questions on pg 40.
Location: Grand Canyon, Colorado River, USA
What does the case study show? A landform created by erosion of a river
How a landform affects people living in an area.
How people affect a landform
How people use a landform
How the Grand Canyon was created:
The Grand Canyon is 10 miles long, 1 mile deep and 180 miles long. It was formed by the interaction of climate, geology and the river
Colorado.
1. Climate – little rainfall in the area creates few tributaries so the surface around the Canyon is flat.
2. Geology – Hard, resistant rocks stick out into the Canyon, making it hard for sideways (lateral) erosion to take place. The Earth
underneath the Canyon is being pushed up, so the wide and powerful Colorado River erodes downwards (vertical erosion). This keeps
the Canyon narrow and deep.
3. River – This erodes the bottom of the Canyon by attrition, hydraulic action, corrasion and corrosion.
How People Use the Canyon:
5 million tourists visit the Canyon
each year, bringing $millions to
the local economy. People visit
because of the natural beauty and
wildlife of an area:
 They camp and picnic.
 They hike.
 They go on mule trips.
 They fish and hunt.
 They have meals in
restaurants in the Canyon
park.
 They go on
helicopter/balloon rides
over the Canyon.
How the Canyon affects People
Living Nearby:
 It provides jobs in tourism
and has a positive
multiplier effect as people
stay in nearby hotels, eat in
restaurants etc.
 Tourists who come by car
cause traffic jams, noise
pollution and atmospheric
pollution.
How People Affect the Canyon:
 Many animals have been
hunted & fished to
extinction.
 Footpath erosion is taking
place changing the
appearance of the Canyon.
 Many rocks are stolen.
 The peace and tranquillity
of the area has been ruined
by too many visitors and
too much traffic.
How can we manage the
problems?
 You can only fish or
hunt with a licence.
 You must book mule
treks a year in advance
due to limits on the
number of treks each
year.
 The Canyon has been
made a World Heritage
Site so stealing rocks is
illegal.
 A park and ride system
has been introduced to
keep cars out of the
park. More car parks
are being built out of
the park.
 More bike and hiking
trails have been built.
