This Orthodox baptistery creates a “unicum” within the realms of Paleochristian
Byzantine art, since no other baptismal building in the late ancient world managed to maintain so
perfectly both architectural structure and interior decoration, composed of marble, stuccoes and
mosaics.
Extraordinary is the mosaic decoration that represents the most ancient legacy coming from a scene
of the Baptism of Christ, expressed in mosaic in a monumental structure.
Its construction began around the first half of the 5th century and was completely finished around the
year 450 and can be considered one of the oldest buildings in Ravenna.
It is a simple building of octagonal structure.
