GESTATIONAL DIABETES
DIET GUIDELINES
GUIDELINES
The following foods are concentrated sources of sugar and should be avoided:
sweetened or unsweetened juice
sugar, honey, syrup
dried fruit, candied fruit
candy, chocolate
fruit canned in syrup
sweetened cereal
regular Jello®, pudding, ice cream
sweetened yoghurt
cakes, pastry, pies, donuts, sweet rolls
chocolate milk
iced tea, lemonade, fruit flavoured mineral water
regular soft drinks, tonic water
jam, jelly, marmalade
sweetened chewing gum
(Alternatives to the above sweet foods are Crystal Light, Sugar-Free Koolaid,
Equal, Splenda, fruit canned in juice, Jello Light, plain or aspartame-sweetened
yoghurt, diet pop, and sugar-reduced jam.) See page 2 for more ideas.

SAMPLE MEAL PLAN
TIME:
BREAKFAST
* cheese or unsweetened(natural) peanut butter or egg
* 2 slices bread/toast with margarine/butter or 1 cup hot or cold cereal
* 1 cup milk
MORNING SNACK
*If greater than 4 hours between breakfast and lunch include a snack of 1
small piece of fruit or 2 plain cookies (example: digestives, arrowroots)
LUNCH
* sandwich

2 slices of bread
meat, fish, poultry, cheese or eggs
margarine/butter/mayonnaise
* vegetables
* 1 small piece of fruit
* 1 cup milk or plain/diet yoghurt
AFTERNOON SNACK
* 1 small piece of fruit OR 1 slice bread with margarine/butter OR 2 plain
cookies
DINNER
* meat, fish, or poultry
* 1 cup potato, rice or pasta
* vegetables
* 1 cup (250 ml) milk
* gravy, margarine/butter, salad dressing
BEDTIME SNACK
* ½ sandwich or 8 soda crackers with cheese or peanut butter
* 1 cup milk
NOTES
- Coffee, tea and sugar-free pop (sweetened with aspartame) may be used in
moderation.

HEALTHY SNACK IDEAS for GDM
1 piece fresh fruit
½- 1 cup unsweetened canned fruit
2 - 3 plain cookies (Digestives, Arrowroots, Graham Crackers, Social Teas)
4 melba toast and cheese
small bowl (½ cup) cereal with milk
¾ cup or 175 g carton diet yogurt
1 small homemade muffin
3 cups hot air popped popcorn
1 slice whole wheat toast, 1 tsp. margarine and 1 tsp. sugar reduced jam
½ sandwich (1 slice whole wheat bread and 1 ounce lean meat)
raw vegetable sticks (peppers, celery, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower) and ½ cup
yogurt dip
1 serving “light” hot chocolate
1 cup milk
3 rice cakes or corn cakes
1 cup soup (choose clear instead of creamy varieties)
1 small bag pretzels
½ cup cottage cheese (1%) and ½ cup fruit
low sugar pudding or frozen dessert
