Reflections, Announcements, & News from the Pastor’s Desk
20th Sunday in Ordinary
Time: “Whoever eats
my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me
and I in him”
Someme ago I read about a mother who had a frightening experience with her two year old son. She found him playing with an empty bole of heart medicine. She was unable to get him to tell her what happened to the Fr. Mario Olea
pills that were in the bole, so she spent six tortured hours with him in the hospital as the staff tried to pump his stomach. Fortunately, he hadn’t swallowed any of the pills, but if he had they could have killed him. Now this mother spends most of her free me speaking to parents’ groups warning them how easily children can swallow the wrong stuff. Stascs show that more than a million children under six are vicms of accidental poisoning every year.
How does a child tell the difference between Sweet-‐Tarts and Tums, Tic Tacs and Motrin, Hershey’s chocolate and Ex-‐Lax, Pine-‐
Sol and apple juice. If you are a child and can’t read labels, how can you tell which is which?
It’s not just children that can be fooled by lookalikes. How oen have we bought fruit-‐flavored drinks in the supermarket that have never seen a piece of fruit? They just look and taste like they have.
Most of you can probably see where this is headed. You can’t always judge something by appearances. This is what Jesus is talking about today. We cannot tell the difference between consecrated or unconsecrated hosts or consecrated or unconsecrated wine by looking at it or smelling it or tasng it or even pung it in a test tube. We can only take it on faith the bread and wine that has been consecrated at Mass is Jesus’ body and blood and that it is food that will give us eternal life. He tells us: “The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” In case the point isn’t clear, he says it with emphasis: ”Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” Amen, amen means I’m not kidding. I am not fooling around. This is for real, this is serious. The only way we know this is so because Jesus told us so. Just as a parent has to tell his or her child “This is good for you”, or “this is not good for you”, as also God tells us what is truly for our good and what isn’t.
It is a queson of faith. If my doctor tells me to do something and I believe what he says. I will do it, unless I enjoy pain or I just want to die early. In other words, faith is not just in our head, it is also in the way we live. Are we interested in deepening our relaonship with God? If we believe the Eucharist is Christ, that this sacred food gives us eternal life, then isn’t making me to come to Mass whenever we can and receiving the Eucharist whenever possible something we would want to do?
Our first two readings encourage us to be wise people. A foolish person is limited mentally; they see things superficially. A wise person sees beyond the obvious. If we adopt the vision that God gives us, a vision that goes beyond what we can figure out for ourselves, a vision we call faith, we are the wisest people of all. Homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson-Cincinnati Archdiocese, Ohio

AT THE TABLE
In today’s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple like home. She doesn’t fluer about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any parcular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom’s table. There they may and can eat and drink deeply.
Today’s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God’s will and act on it.

"Amén, Amén" significa “no estoy bromeando”. No estoy engañando tampoco.
