Summer Assignment
I want you to compare and contrast two versions of American History, A Peoples History of
the United States, by Howard Zinn and A Patriot’s History of the United States by Larry
Schweikart and Michael Allen. Books can be obtained through the San Antonio Public Library,
Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com. I have a PDF copy of Howard Zinn’s A Patriot’s History of
the United States. Please email me if you would like me to send you the copy.
In A People’s History of the United States, read Ch. 11 through the end of the book and in A
Patriot’s History of the United States, read Ch. 12 through the end of the book. You will select
three chapters in each book that discuss the same topics and 1) summarize the authors’ point of
view for each topic, 2) compare and contrast how the authors treat each topic and 3) choose
which point of view you agree with overall and why.
On the first day of class you will hand in a paper with the following requirements:
1. cover page
2. Typed
3. Size 12 font
4. Five page minimum
The paper will be graded according to the following criteria:
Summary-30 points
Compare and Contrast-30 points
Point of view-30 points
Mechanics (Grammar, Spelling, etc.)-10 points
