The Boy and Dragon
Once upon a time there was a young 6-year-old boy who loves dragons. He likes to
read fairy tale books given from his father, especially about dragons. His father would tell
him the bed time stories and some told of his past adventures.
One day, his father had to go on a trip and told him to be good and listen to his
mother. He said he would only leave for 3 days, but the boy already had teary eyes. His
father patted his head and waved goodbye.
The boy comforted himself in his room reading the books all by himself. He was in
his own world there, imagining that he became a dragon, then played with his dragon toys
and made papier-mâché of dragons from colorful layers of origami. His room had always
been filled with dolls, posters, and figures of dragons, even his costume for each
Halloween were always dragons. He was as happy as he could be, for as long as they know,
his friends and neighbors had called him “dragon boy”.
But even so, he had to grow up and with such a pace of thinking dragons are real,
his mother soon grown concerned, sooner or later she would have to face him and tell the
truth that the stories in fairy tales aren’t real and that dragon do not exist. His mother had
been thinking about telling him for a long time but his father always encouraged him into
thinking they were real. So with her husband not at home, it was a great opportunity for
her to set things right.
The next day, before his mother could explain to him, the boy asked, “where can I
find dragons, Ma? Are they really that dangerous?”
The boy was desperate and after a few seconds, his mother collected all her
courage and replied “You cannot find them, Dear, they do not exist in our world. All the
stories you have been reading are not true...”
The boy stopped and thought for a while, he didn’t shed a tear though like what
his mother expected. He dazed at his book still curious and thought “what if it isn’t true?
Maybe Mama is lying...”
He left his mother, who was waiting to comfort him if he wanted to cry a little. She
even prepared a few things he liked to distract him just in case. Even so, the day passed
without the boy crying or whipping in his bedroom. His mother walked upstairs and down
again to check the boy in his room whether he is just doing fine or not.
That night, he wore his warm clothes and went out from the window. His mother
was sleeping downstairs and did not know that her son had already left to go on a journey.

The boy walked and walked, he walked in the path he thought was colorful, just
like inside the fairy tale books. He walked on red soil fields, yellow rusty bridges and
alongside walls of blue, green, purple and orange graffiti. The more he walked, the further
from home he was, but he wasn’t scared at all, the moonlight was glowing so bright he
knew where he was walking will lead him somewhere. If he wanted to find a dragon, the
first thing he had to do is believe. Suddenly a meowing sound could be heard.
“Meow” a yellow cat appeared in front of him. The yellow cat had green and blue
eyes and it immediately caught the boy’s attention. “Where are you going on such a fine
night? Isn’t it past your bedtime?”
A voice came into the boy’s head and the boy was confused on where it came
from, but he knew the cat was trying to communicate with him. He didn’t find this weird,
because there’s a lot of talking cats in fairy tale books. So he answered back “I want to
find a dragon, just like this one”, he opened his book and showed the picture of his
favorite dragon and showed it to the cat. The cat stared and answered “ah yes, I have
seen it before, but perhaps you should take another route which will be much faster.”
The cats’ tail shifted twice and a twinkle could be heard at the end. Right before
his eyes, a path filled with light was glowing right in front of the boy, he was full of awe.
“Thank you very much mister cat.”, said the boy.
“You’re welcome” said the cat and it left.
The boy continued on and walked on the path of light. The more he walked the
more he came to realize he was so close to the clouds. It was as if he had been ascending
all this time without getting tired. The wind was cold; he wasn’t prepared for this so he
had to hurry to the end of the path. The path stopped at a certain point and there he
found an old tree covered in ash. The tree looked like it had grown for a million years but
it was so old and grey it looked as if it had decayed. The boy saw a crack and from inside
the crack was a bright green, he opened the crack which was a soft spot to peel and there
it happened. The whole grey chunk fell off the tree and it became an entrance for the boy
to go in. The tree’s leaves had a green yet golden brightness to it as if many of them just
spurred out a moment ago. He walked on the big branches and then he felt a warm wind
around him. He couldn’t believe his eyes, but a dragon 10 times bigger than him was
waiting for him inside the tree.
The dragon gave him a warm welcome by pulling the boy close to him with his tail.
The tail circled around the boy and the boy who was cold before became much warmer.
The dragon didn’t have sharp scales instead, they were softer than he expected and the
dragon seemed very wise because it didn’t spit out fire or behave like what normal beasts
would. The boy knew he was right all along and that he would tell his mother when he
gets home.

The dragon stared at the boy, his big blue sapphire eyes met with the boy’s black
small eyes. It was like they were already friends and had begun a new connection. The
dragon opened his folded silver blue wings and offered to give the boy a ride. The boy
climbed up happily and held on tight. The dragon gave him his soft scales shaped like a
blanket to keep him warm and was ready to take off. He flapped his wings and then went
into flight. Above the clouds they went and the moon was glowing ever so brightly. Then
they saw a lot of balloons, a lot of them were flying throughout the sky. The balloons
reflected the bright moon’s light which also made the clouds full of colors.
Hanging on one of the balloons, was the same cat he met before. “You found the
dragon, good, good!” said the cat, he smiled, waved at the boy. The boy waved back. The
cat had already gone with the wind and up it went into the never ending sky.
The night sky was so beautiful, the boy started to yawn, and the warm blanket
made of soft scales had driven him asleep. The dragon descended gently and there he
reached the boy’s home. The dragon placed the boy into his bedroom from the window
with its tail, tucked him gently on the small bed with the soft scales and gave a last warm
breathe to say goodbye. The boy was in a deep sleep and muttered “I knew you were
real...” and off the dragon went swiftly flew towards the moon.
The next morning, the boy woke up lying on his bed, the soft scales that kept him
warm was proof of their adventurous night. His mother called him down for breakfast,
and he was so enthusiastic on telling his amazing experience. He went down the stairs
with the soft scales and shouted “Ma, I really saw a dragon last night and I flew with it
across the sky, it was sooo cool! Look at these scales!”
His mother couldn’t believe it, she thought he was just dreaming, but the scales
proved everything and she didn’t know what to say. Then the morning news showed that
a forest that was once presumed to be petrified and died ages ago had just been
discovered was cracked open and sprouted new plant life. The footages of the site were
beautiful, and as the story of her son kept on rolling, she couldn’t believe he was the
cause of the event to happen. She hugged her son and said with relief, “at least you came
home safely, come on I’ll make you your favorite pancakes”
“Yayy! Pancakes” the boy sprung with glee.
He believed this won’t be the last time he will see the dragon. As long as he
believes they are always connected.
