a teacher's thanks

Robb Nash,
I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your presentation last week at
Sir Robert Borden High School in Ottawa. I had the opportunity to have two classes
attend and was equally moved during both shows.
As educators, we try to pass on our wisdom to our students to help them make good
choices. Sharing our experiences is not always enough. Yes, we made our mistakes
when we were their age, and would love to be able to influence them to make better
decisions than we did, but in most cases, it is just another adult that does not
understand what it is like to be their age.
Having had friends killed in horrible accidents and as a result of avoidable situations, I
understand how a momentary lapse in judgement can be catastrophic. I truly believe
that your story can, and does, make a difference with today's youth.
Your were given a second chance to live. You used that second chance to grow and
thrive as a musician. Rather than use your fame to throw money at an issue, you threw
away the money and threw yourself at the issue. The way you have chosen to live your
second chance at life is a truly selfless act. Your message has something for everyone.
From the very popular, to the very isolated, students couldn't help but relate to some
aspect of every story you told. I could see the personal reflection, inspiration and hope
on faces of students as they left the auditorium and congregated in the foyer.
You have inspired me to dig deeper and encourage my students to dig deeper. If they
feel that they can't, I will offer my shovelling skills to help them with their digging.
Your group saves lives and changes lives. For the lives you change and your thought
provoking words, I thank you.
Sincerely,
Steve Bollman
