Classifying Teddy Bear Cookies
Background
Have you ever walked into a supermarket and tried to find a container of milk?
How did you know where to look for it? A supermarket is arranged in labeled aisles, with
all the products that the store sells classified. Classification is grouping things by
observing their similarities and differences.
Define Problem
How can we classify Teddy Bear Cookies into different groups?

Design & Conduct Experiment
Materials List: 10 assorted Teddy Graham cookies, 1 paper cup, 1 plate, 2 plastic
gloves, pencil, lab journal, small metric ruler, triple beam balance
Safety Procedures: Use gloves when handling food. Do not taste cookies. Make sure to
properly smell cookies by wafting. Keep cookies off the table. Do not put
bare cookies on the triple beam balance.
Performance Procedures: 1. Remove Teddy Bear cookies from the cup.
2. Observe the properties and characteristics of each cookie.
3. Record your observations.
4. Classify all Teddy Bear cookies into two different groups.
5. Divide these two groups further-four different groups total.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 using different properties.
