Position Summary:
The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for an Assistant
Professor tenure-track appointment or an Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, a non-tenure track faculty
continuing appointment. The position will support a nationally recognized undergraduate financial planning
program through teaching, scholarship and outreach.
Expectations of the Assistant Professor tenure-track appointment include substantial responsibilities for
undergraduate instruction, research, outreach and graduate student advising is possible. A terminal degree in the
field is required.
Individuals appointed to the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice must be a successful and effective
financial planning professional. Expectations include professional preparation of students and continued
activity in the profession; a related graduate or professional degree is required. There is no expectation of an
extensive research program as is typical of tenure-track faculty appointments.
The Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics (http://www.aaec.vt.edu/ ) collaborates with the
Department of Finance, Insurance & Business Law http://www.finance.pamplin.vt.edu/) to offer the CFP Board
of Standards Registered program (http://www.cfp.net/ ). The 9-month, academic-year appointment is located on
the Blacksburg campus. The starting date is August 10, 2014. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
Responsibilities:
 Teaching undergraduate courses and mentoring students regarding academics; participation in
extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities; professional internships; and career placement.
 Developing a nationally recognized, focused and sustainable program of scholarship and outreach on
important topics related to financial planning.
 Obtaining external funding (real or in-kind) to support teaching, scholarship or outreach.
 Maintaining active membership in relevant professional organizations and demonstrate commitment to
the financial planning profession.
Qualifications for the Assistant Professor Tenure-Track Position:
Required qualifications for the Assistant Professor Tenure-Track Position include:
 Doctorate in Financial Planning, Agricultural/Applied Economics, Finance, Consumer/Family
Economics or Economics with an emphasis in personal financial planning.
 Demonstrated content expertise and strong teaching skills to prepare young professionals.
 Demonstrated skill or potential for excellence in applied research to conduct and disseminate findings in
refereed publications and presentations.
 Interest in advising graduate students.
Desired qualifications for the Assistant Professor Tenure-Track Position include:
 CFP® certificant or earned within four years of hire date.
 Professional designations such as CPA, CFA, CLU, ChFC, CIMA, AIF®, JD or other financial
designations.
 Expertise with planning, client relationship, portfolio management or other related software.
Qualifications for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice Position:
Required qualifications for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice Position include:
 CFP® certificant or other professional designation, such as CPA, CFA, CLU, ChFC, CIMA, AIF®, or
JD.
 Graduate degree in Financial Planning, Business (e.g, MBA, Finance, Accounting, Tax),
Consumer/Family Economics, Economics/Applied Economics or other related discipline.
 Demonstrated content expertise and significant accomplishment and experience as a financial planning
professional.
 Demonstrated skill or potential for excellence teaching and mentoring young professionals.
Desired qualifications for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice Position include:
 Experience providing continuing education (CE) programs for financial planning practitioners.
