What’s Going on in 2008 .............. 4
On August 16th our Ladies of Harley met for another LOH outing. We
had a total of 11 people join in the fun for a skeet and target shoot set
up by Terry Airheart. Special thanks to Terry's husband for arranging
lunch for us. We all had an opportunity to shoot clay pigeons, balloons and targets. Congratulations to Aubrey MtCastle for winning a
fifty dollar give certificate to Cabellos for her Annie Oakley imitation
and bagging a paper turkey. For all you lady members that aren't participating in our LOH events, come on out, get involved and join the
fun. We've done a lot this year, everything from riding horses, skeet
shooting, make up, hair fixers, massages and still to come is scrap
booking, an LOH trip to Williamsburg, quilting and much more.

Assistant Director
Dan Gray
Hell-o everyone,
Hard to believe it’s September already. Although
every season is great for riding, I think Fall my
favorite. Speaking of September, this is also the month that
we’ll mail out the ballots so you may place your vote for
Assistant Director, Treasurer, and Secretary. I’ll announce the
nominees at the September Chapter meeting on 9/2 and you’ll
have an opportunity to hear each candidate speak for a couple
minutes. Each of these candidates are to be commended for
stepping up and offering their time and commitment to the
Chapter. All of the candidates are well qualified for the offices
they seek and each have my full confidence and support.
Ballot boxes will be available at the October Chapter meeting
and during the entire month of October at the Dealership. All
votes will be counted on November 1st and the winners
announced at the November 4th General Meeting.
Also, starting with the September General meeting our
Christmas Party tickets will go on sale for 15.00 each. Tickets
are on a first come first serve basis and ticket sales are open to
all members and guests. The Christmas Party will be on
December 6 with social hour starting at 6, Dinner from 7 until 8
and music, dance and fun from 8 until 11.
At the last membership meeting I made the announcement
that we needed volunteers to work the first day of the State
Rally next year and I passed around a sign up sheet. The
response was overwhelming. We had 50 people sign up and
I’ve had numerous people come to me since then and offer to
work also. I really appreciate the support and everyone’s
participation will help make this the best State Rally ever.
Thank You!
There are several Chapter rides this month such as the LOH
to Colonial Williamsburg on 9/5-9/7 and York Harley plant open
house on 9/25 – 9/28. Myrtle Beach Fall bike week starts 10/1
and RVHD has rides and something going on about every
Saturday. Come on out and participate and join in all the fun
your Chapter has to offer. Let’s not forget Saturday morning
coffee and donuts at the HOG Hall and Sunday morning
Breakfast rides that meet this month at Chip and Joes Diner in
Salem at 9:00 AM. Enjoy the Season and by all means ride
and have fun safely.
I have to back up and say what a
great time most of us had at the
horseback riding outing at Slocum’s
Appaloosa Ranch in beautiful
downtown Bonsack, Virginia. Notice I
did say most of us. Some of us had a
stubborn horse and we don’t want to
talk about it…ever again. A very
special thank you to Aubrey Mt.Castle
for suggesting and coordinating the
day. Great Job Aubrey and some of
us hope we do it again sometime. But
some of us don’t want to talk about
ever…..again.
Well the month of July has been a
little slow for the LOH. Other than the
Tri Chapter Challenge we have just
been trying to stay cool. I will let
everyone know next month how we
faired with the Tri Chapter Challenge.
Next month we are trying our hand at
skeet shooting and I believe Terry
has some tips for us to use and we
will be sharing those tips at a later
date, but before we actually go skeet
shooting. As far as I know we will be
riding to Lexington to skeet shoot; so
it should be a fun day. I know I am
excited about going. Its something
new and different and I always like to
try new things and broaden my
horizons.
Looking a little further forward into
September please remember and try
to plan for the LOH overnight ride to
Colonial Williamsburg. More details to
follow.
Well that’s it for now. Everybody be
safe the rest of the summer and lets
all look for a beautiful fall in our
future.
In Sisterhood,
Chigger

OFFICERS’ CORNER
Historian
Bill Wilkinson
Summer is almost gone and the
next article I write will be delivered in a Fall
newsletter so I will let this article be like me
and the remainder of Summer...short and
sweet.
On February 4, 1987, Loyd and Kathy Shiffer
closed on the property at 2450 Centre Ave.,
buying it from John W. Butterfield and wife for
the paltry sum of $75,000. From the meager
beginnings of Roanoke Valley Harley Davidson at Centre Ave. to the Peters Creek
Road RVHD, 25 years has passed, has been
celebrated this year and a new generation of
Shiffers is expanding the empire into the New
River Valley.
On a larger scale, on August 8 of this year,
Harley-Davidson Inc. completed its $108 million purchase of MV Agusta Group, an Italian
motorcycle maker. H-D had announced its
plans to buy the premium sport bike maker in
July as part of its efforts to boost sales in
Europe, where sport bikes account for 80% of
sales.
MV Agusta's bikes are considered premium,
high-end bikes and typically sell in a range of
$14,495 to $24,995 in the U.S.
Our local dealer and the parent company are
proving that it is not enough to just be on the
right track. If we do not move forward, the
competition in our rear view mirror will advance and crush us.

SECRETARY
DIANE CROSIER
Hello Everyone!
It seems like summer just started and
now it’s almost over! Time flies when you’re
having fun, or perhaps it’s because I’m getting old! (ha)
I want to tell you what a rewarding experience we had
when we went to the dedication of Fanee’s Habitat for Humanity house. Fanee was just beaming and was so proud
of her new home. She also said she would never forget her
HOG family. For any new members who might be reading
this, the LOH selects a charity each year for which we have
events to raise money. Fanee Johnson has a son who is
physically and mentally challenged who is almost grown
and she didn’t have adequate facilities to take care of him.
Now she has gotten her Habitat house after two years of
red tape, hard work and paperwork. For any of you ladies
out there who might want to join us, you are more than welcome.
Again, I want to remind everyone that you must keep
your National dues current to be a member of the local
chapter and to receive the RVHD discount. You usually
receive your dues expiration notice several months before
they’re due, so we have a tendency to forget about it. You
can renew your membership online or at 1-800-CLUBHOG
with a credit card.
If any of you need me to do something within a certain
timeframe, please call me instead of e-mailing me. I try to
check my messages every day, but I sometimes do not
check them in the evenings. I do not mind your calling me
at any time. If I don’t answer, please leave me a message. I
have voicemail on my home phone as well as my cell
phone. My home number is 540-384-6907. Try my home
number first—if you don’t get an answer, listen to my voicemail because I give you my cell number at the end of my
message.
I will be more than happy to publish messages for you,
but it is our policy not to post anything that is held on the
same day as one of our RVHOG events. We need to support our local chapter whenever possible.
REMEMBER, RIDE AND HAVE FUN!!!!!! Diane

Harley Joke
A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle
when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop.
The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look
at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage "Hey Doc, want to
take a look at this?"
The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his ha nds on a rag
and said, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair
any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new.
So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really
big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?"
The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mec h a n i c . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Try doing it with the engine running."
Motorcycle Wisdom of the Road
• Midnight bugs taste best.
• Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold
everything you need.
• Home is where your bike sits still long enough to leave a few drops of
oil on the ground.
• The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rearview mirror.
• Bikes don't leak oil, they mark their territory.
• Never mistake horsepower for staying power.
• If you don't ride in the rain - you don't ride.
• A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.
• Young riders pick a destination and go. . . Old riders pick a direction
and go.
• A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it.
• Sometimes the fastest way to get there is to stop for the night.
• Winter is Nature's way of telling you to polish your bike.
• Well-trained reflexes are quicker than luck.
• The best alarm clock is sunshine on chrome.
• A friend is someone who'll get out of bed at 2 am to drive his pickup
to the middle of nowhere.
• There's something ugly about a NEW bike on a trailer.
• Practice wrenching on your own bike.
• Never be ashamed to unlearn an old habit
• Maintenance is as much art as it is science.
• If you ride like there's no tomorrow - there won't be.
• Gray-haired riders don't get that way from pure luck
• There are drunk riders. There are old riders. There are NO old, drunk
riders.
• No matter what marquee you ride, it's all the same wind.

RIDE TO HARLEY FACTORY
TOUR IN YORK PA. SEPTEMBER
25-28 THURSDAY-FRIDAYSATURDAY-SUNDAY
Hello fellow RVHD HOG
Members
Just a short note to thank all
who were on the Blowing
Rock/Grandfather Mt. ride.
I want everyone to know
how grateful Pansy & I are
for all your help, concern &
prayers that fateful night in
NC. As I pulled "my stunt" I
could hear the concern in
your voices. I also knew I
was in good hands. I knew
that my Bride would be
taken care of (weather I did
or did not survive my heart
attack).
As the ambulance pulled
out to head to the hospital I
saw a number of Harleys
pull out & follow us to the
hospital. It was a wondrous
site. Ya'll never let me
down.
I promise I'll not try to pull
that kind of stunt again!
See ya all on the road soon.
Your friend, Frank Wilkins,Sr.
