A pink and purple glittery atmosphere set the mood for the crowning of the new Mr. and

Miss University of South Florida Scholarship Pageant in the USF Marshall Student

Center Oval Theater on Tuesday night.

USF student Sidney Resmondo received the official Miss University of South Florida title and USF student Nicholas Smart received the official Mr. University of South

Florida title in front of over 300 students and faculty of USF on Tuesday night. The two winners, as well as the other contestants, were judged based on their intelligence, confidence and presentation, according to the student government event website.

“Anyone can compete in the event as long as they turn in applications and are USF students,” said Natalie Emerson, the director of programming and traditions, in an email interview.

Student government feels that since the program was revived in 2008, the program has come a long way, according to the event website.

The winners of the pageant were crowned Mr. and Miss University of South Florida and awarded a $500 academic scholarship from the USF Alumni Association.

“The Mr. and Miss University of South Florida Scholarship Pageant has come a long way since the program was revived in 2008,” according to the student government event website. “Past Student Government Program Directors had laid the foundation to this year's vision and helped make this year's pageant a huge success.”

The scoring information for the pageant was set up in sections. The private interview was

25 percent. The onstage interview was 5 percent. The lifestyle and fitness in swimwear was 15 percent. The talent portion was 35 percent and eveningwear was 20 percent, according to the event website.

“Nick has been preparing for several months now,” said Kelly Smart, the mother of

Nicholas Smart. “I am very proud of him.”

The winner of the Miss University of South Florida crown became eligible to compete in the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant this summer to represent Bulls Country, according to the event website.

“I hope people enjoyed tonight’s event and recognized how outstanding our students are,” Emerson said. “I also hope the contestants had a wonderful experience and were able to grow personally, as well as further connect with the University.”
