“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the Kingdom of G (Luke 9:62).”
T
he past year brought me new understanding of the parable
of the plowman. While we continually marveled at Gods
provision for our ministry, we also learned that receiving these
blessings involves putting hand to plow and persevering
through rocky soils and brambles. The following stories
illustrate these lessons:
L
ast summer, Waco set a record with 87 days recorded
above 100oF. Each morning I marveled as staff, interns
and live-in volunteers headed eagerly out to work in another
blazing hot day. Their willing spirits and lack of grumbling
humbled and inspired me. What a blessing to work with such
an idealistic, motivated team!
The drought which
accompanied this heat
destroyed crops and
rangeland, and led to a mass
sell-off of livestock
throughout Texas. WHRI’s
herd, on the other hand, has
grown, and we didn’t
purchase hay until October.
Through wise management,
and hard work (including
building and moving lots of
fences), our livestock team
rotated our stock efficiently
and used our pastures to
their maximum.

A
fter losing one rice crop due to flooding in fall 2010, and
another due to drought in the winter, many Haitian rice
producers lost both their seed and their hope. When the rains
finally started in May, only 30% of the fields around Ferrier
were planted. Nonetheless, WHR-Haiti extensionist, Eric Jean
Baptist was eager to try the new system of rice intensification
(SRI) he had learned the previous year.
In contrast to traditional methods, SRI involves transplanting
tiny, 10-day-old seedlings at a relatively wide spacing. Eric’s
neighbors watched with amusement, telling him he was wasting
his time, as he planted 0.4 acres with three different rice
varieties. By July, each tiny shoot had produced 30-40 heads
full of rice kernels, and the same neighbors who made fun of
him for planting his seedlings “too early and too far apart”
began asking his advice. When they discovered that his SRI
plots used only 1/10th of the seed and half the fertilizer they
were accustomed to, the neighbors became converts.
S
even years ago, the Heart of Texas Urban Gardening
Coalition (HOTUGC.org) was a dormant bud in the
imagination of several east-Waco gardening fanatics. WHRI
nurtured this interest with staff and intern support, and today it
includes 25 organizations allied to promote urban food
production and healthy living. Some 30 churches and schools
have benefitted from the services of the Coalition, and each
year they bring together a diverse cross-section of nearly 1,000
local residents to honor Martin Luther King Day by planting
gardens throughout the city.
They also played a pivotal
role in forming the new
Downtown Waco Farmers’
Market.
The Coalition will soon
join the ranks of Waco nonprofits as it receives its
501(c)3 papers. In keeping
with WHRI’s development
philosophy of working
ourselves out of a job, their
Board of Directors no
longer includes any of our
personnel. We find great
satisfaction from stepping back and watching the child of our
persistence grow to maturity and independence.
E
xamples like these inspire us to hold onto the Kingdom
plow in a world full of natural disasters and economic
uncertainty. Join us in celebrating a year of challenges and
victories!
Blessings,
Keeping a Hand
Interns & Live-in Volunteers
Interns who completed training included:
Aaron Basescu, Produce and Pecan Intern, works for an agriculture education
program in Cleveland, TN.
Hannah Breckbill, Produce Intern, works as a team manager at Rock Spring Farm
in Decorah Iowa.
Jessica and Justin Bullock, Livestock and Pecan interns moved to Pennsylvania
where they work on a small farm at the foothills of the Catskill mountains.
Lucas Land, Urban Gardening Intern, began an assignment with Mennonite
Central Committee in Bolivia.
Katherine Moncrief, Urban Gardening Intern, plans to move to N. Carolina where
she will continue working with school gardening.
Kelly Thompson, Produce Intern, works for Seeds of Change, an organic and
heirloom seed producer in Iowa.
Mark Montgomery, AmeriCorps Member, teaches at Live Oak Classical School
in Waco.
Jonathan Bruce, AmeriCorps Member, works through Baylor University with the
Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition.
Anali Smucker, AmeriCorps Member, continues as a second-year WHRI
AmeriCorps member.
Elise Voyvodic, AmeriCorps Member, works as a pre-natal client educator in
Chattanooga, TN.
Many Live-In Volunteers stayed at WHRI for most or all of the year. Their contributions to our farm operations, and community life
are invaluable. Our housing units were so full that one eager volunteer decided to live in a tent so that she could join us!
Local Education & Urban Gardening
Tours and Workgroups stayed strong through the year with a total of 1743 participants. 408 individuals took part in Service-Learning
opportunities, while Off-Farm presentations reached another 1525 people. 305 Volunteers provided over 1500 hours of labor
throughout this period. WHRI helped five young women carry out a three-week “Texas at the Table” road trip sponsored by the Baptist
General Convention of Texas. We also promoted USDA Universal School Breakfast and Summer Meal participation in
collaboration with the McLennan County Hunger Coalition and the Texas Hunger Initiative.
After-School Garden Clubs continued at two middle schools and two elementary schools. WHRI AmeriCorps Vista member, Bethel
Erickson consulted for 12 other school and church gardening projects in her work with the Heart of Texas Gardening Coalition. To
further support these activities, WHRI co-published the Heart of Texas Gardening Manual designed for community gardening practitioners.
International Programs
Several Ferrier, Haiti farmers tried System of Rice Intensification
(SRI) methods, but fall flooding, winter drought, and marauding
cattle caused losses in all but one plot. The spring crop was much
more promising, and by July, several SRI plots planted by WHRHaiti extensionists become the focus of much interest. Our ox
traction project received a large grant from the Vista Hermosa
Foundation, and 12 ox teams and owners were trained and equipped
for use in farm fields. WHRI sent aid to Ferrier in the fall to address
needs caused by flooding and a cholera outbreak.
Neil Rowe Miller visited western El Salvador at the request of
Habitat for Humanity, El Salvador to provide advice on agriculture
and community development. The El Salvador photo documentary,
Valle Nuevo ran six weeks at the Art Center Waco, and Salvadoran
composer Carlos Colón joined photographer Mark Menjivar for a
fund-raiser that generated nearly $3,000 to support our development
efforts in El Salvador. Youth leaders from the Valle Nuevo
community requested and received assistance with several
agricultural projects, while agronomists from the regional non-governmental organization, ADES, increasingly ask WHRI for advice and
networking. WHRI sponsored a visit by Valle Nuevo farmers to visit vegetable producers in La Palma.

d To The Plow...
Farm Operations
Dairy production remained steady despite months of intense
heat. Health problems caused us to cull or sell several of our
older does, but we ended the year with a younger, more
productive herd. Although a new irrigation well pumped day and
night for nearly 10 weeks, we still couldn’t keep up with the
needs of our annual pastures, most of which didn’t survive the
summer. We butchered four steers through the year and sold
both retail cuts and quarters. We also processed a large quantity
of goat meat, and our goat sausage has become a hot commodity.
Our laying hens suffered several predator attacks and slowed
production as temperatures heated up, but our sales still
exceeded the previous year. The local Cargill plant again supplied
us with 100 turkeys, and by Thanksgiving we marketed 14-16 lb
birds. Our 2010 honey bees produced 20 gallons of amazing
honey which sold out just 10 days after harvest.
In fall 2010, we moved the vegetable garden to the bestdrained land on the farm, and begun a new rotation scheme that allows us to increase cover cropping and improve our timeliness and
plant health. Insect pests were a major problem, but fall squash, cucumbers, and pole beans produced abundantly and we donated large
amounts to the Caritas food bank. A warm, dry spring allowed the produce interns to work without weather delays, and our early spring
and summer crops were excellent. As the summer progressed, insect damage was unusually severe, especially flea beetles on the beet
family crops and squash bugs on summer squash.
The 2010 pecan crop suffered from severe late-season insect damage and only yielded a quarter of what we anticipated. The 2011 crop
set a fairly heavy load, but despite timely scouting and spraying, it was hit by the worst pecan nut casebearer population we have ever
experienced.
We acquired a new tractor and two farm pickup trucks thanks to the generosity of Brazos Valley Equipment, Cooper Foundation and
other donors. Farm Manager, David Cole, completed five productive years at WHRI, and was replaced by Oneas Mufandaedza, an
animal scientist from Zimbabwe.
Finances and Stewardship
Farm production income ended down 10% from last year. Pecan and
vegetable sales were the two main contributors to this drop, while livestock sales
(live goats, meat, and milk) significantly out-performed last year. Village Store
sales in the last two quarters kept pace with the previous year, but we ended the
fiscal year down 28%. Tuition from Local Education programs also caught up
somewhat late in the year but ended 5% lower than last year.
Donations for the year totaled $166,479, 21% ahead of last year. Endowment
giving totaled $9,530, which represented a considerable drop. However, grant
income finished the year over $183,000, which is 65% higher than last year.
Significant new grants included roughly $60,000 for WHRI organizational
development, and over $40,000 for Haiti programs.
Expenses for the year were 17% higher than last year. Significant increases
included intern and staff salaries and Haiti program costs. These figures still
remained 8% below budget leaving us with a net income of $12,737.
Publicity included television spots by local and Austin stations, several of which
featured on our Living on the Other Side program. Both print and broadcast
media thoroughly covered the El Salvador photo documentary, and KWBU
featured WHRI on their Dot ORG program just prior to spring Farm Day. We
contracted with a social media professional to upgrade our website as well as
improving our links to Facebook and Twitter.
