in solving multi-step, real world problems.
UNDERLYING SKILLS AND CONCEPTS:
measure volume (metric units)
of given objects.
Estimate Volume in Liters and Milliliters

ey Ide
Volume (capacity) is the amount of space an object takes up.
You can think about volume as the space inside a container.
The metric system uses milliliters (mL) and liters (L) to
measure liquid volume.
Benchmarks for You
1 L 1,000 mL
A liter is a little more than a quart.
1 liter is about 4 cups.
1 liter is about 1 quart.
1 milliliter is less than
a teaspoon full.

Choose the best unit to measure the amount of gas in a car’s tank.
A. milliliter
B. millimeter
C. liter
D. kilometer
To decide, look at the answer choices.
Choices B and D measure length, not volume.
Choice A is a tiny unit. So Choice C, liter, is the best unit of measure.
