MONDAY, APRIL 4
8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Creating and Growing a Money-Making Events
Division
($149 reg fee applies to this half-day workshop)
Events are critical to local media transformation. Many
local media companies investing in growing an events
division are seeing between 30 - 50% profit margins. Events
have the potential to bring in more revenue than digital
can at this time (in some markets). Local media
companies are in the best position to leverage their strong
brands to create full-blown events divisions. Stein will bring
what LMA has learned from many industry experts to this
3.5 hour “light version” of their training program designed
to provide media executives, ad directors, marketing
directors and events specialists with the tools and industry
best practices to start developing their own strategic plan.
Trainer: Amie Stein, Training & Development Director, LMA
Presented by:
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Opening Lunch/Keynote: Christian Hendricks
The McClatchy Company has embarked on a complete
company reinvention. This effort has touched every aspect
of the operation including a corporate organizational
structure overhaul, a redesign of all newspapers and
digital products, audience and data driven decision
making, video efforts, new digital revenue teams and
regional realignments. Hendricks will share McClatchy’s
reinvention story as well as speak to the “untold”
transformation story of local media from an operator’s
perspective.
Speaker: Christian Hendricks, Vice President of Products,
Marketing and Innovation, The McClatchy Company
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
General Session: An Industry in Transformation
In a time of such transformative change in the industry, a
panel of key leaders will discuss where their companies are
headed and what they see for the future.
Speakers: James Green, VP Digital, Lee Enterprises; Chris
Loretto, VP Digital, DFM; additional panelists to be
confirmed.
2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Breakout Session I: Change Agent Sales Leaders
Managing sales teams and sales environments in this era
of digital migration and business evolution is increasingly
challenging. These leaders will share their paths to
successful cultural change, the tactics they applied to
achieve successful outcomes, and the challenges they
have overcome in driving digital growth.
Speakers: Dani Longoria, VP Advertising, Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel; Sam Brown, VP Advertising, Miami Herald;
Stephanie Boggins, VP Sales, Memphis Commercial
Appeal
Breakout Session II: Insert Strategies & Preprint
Revenue
Yes, you can get insert revenues growing again! You’ve
heard all the objections advertisers give as they try to
tamp down insert rates: Circulation volumes are down,
shoppers prefer digital coupons, other papers don’t
charge so much, etc., etc. At this session, you’ll learn how
to counter those objections with hard data — and regain
the leverage in rate negotiations. A former newspaper
publisher and a former agency buyer will share the secrets
to winning back your share of the market with preprints.
Plus, you’ll learn five proven insert strategies for
newspapers that ensure you’re leaving nothing on the
table.
Speakers: Mike Petrak, Managing Partner, PrismXL; Wendy
Wade, President, PrismXL
3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Theater Session: Product Showcase I
Join our business partners on the exhibit floor to hear the
latest in product and service offerings.
3:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.

Plan on attending this presentation to recognize
digital excellence across multiple categories and divisions.
4:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

and how to best navigate challenges in this space.
5:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Theater Session: Product Showcase II
Join our business partners on the exhibit floor to hear the
latest in product and service offerings.
TUESDAY, APRIL 5
8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Theater Session: Product Showcase III
Join our business partners on the exhibit floor to hear the
latest in product and service offerings.
9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Breakout Session I: Disaster Recovery &
Infrastructure
Many newspapers have outsourced and/or consolidated
production, including website hosting, ad building,
prepress, press and distribution center operations. Some
emergency situations may include catastrophic failure of a
facility, such as fire, natural disaster or major power outage.
Previous backup and recovery plans are frequently in need
of updates. Veteran operations and IT managers will discuss
their personal experiences in this area and suggest
planning approaches and advice for organizations.
Speakers: Mark Grunlund, Director of Manufacturing,
Advance Central Services, Inc.; additional panelists to be
confirmed.
Breakout Session II: The Importance of SMBs
The local SMB is becoming more and more of a coveted
target advertiser for large digital-only players. We see them
deploying local ad sales teams, setting up call centers to
call on SMB’s and creating very easy, highly targeted and
intuitive self service options. How can we more effectively
and profitably increase our share of local SMB business and
win at digital with them? This session will discuss bundling,
messaging, marketing and sales approaches to grow
share, revenue and profit with SMBs.
Speaker: Christine Stonecipher, Advertising VP, Treasure
Coast Newspapers
9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
Theater Session: Print Isn’t Dead!
Print is not dead. In fact, there is plenty we can do to grow,
save and improve print now. And newspapers would be
crazy not to invest in print, the source of much of their
digital content, subscriber commitments and advertising
revenue. This session will help you learn how to get your
team organized and thinking outside the box to take a
fresh look at the future potential of print.
Speaker: Bill Ostendorf, President, Creative Circle Media
Solutions
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Breakout Session I: Monetizing Social Media
Expert panelists in the industry will discuss various
approaches to maximize revenue via direct campaigns,
contests, promotion, and platforms. Mike Blinder, of The
Blinder Group, will moderate the conversation in this
important area of new revenue streams.
Speakers: John Winn Miller, CSO, Friends2Follow; Kim
Wilson, President, Social News Desk; Matt Coen, President
and Co-Founder, Second Street; Shannon Kinney, Founder,
DreamLocal
Moderator: Mike Blinder, President, Blinder Group
Breakout Session II: Video - What is Working,
What Isn’t and What’s Next?
Recently, some media companies have been placing
large bets on video. Users are not only increasingly
accepting of video, they are now expecting it to be an
integral part of their experience. Advertisers are becoming
more video savvy and SMBs are adopting video as part of
their marketing strategies. With all of these efforts in play,
what are the best practices? What have we learned and
what are industry innovators looking to try next?
Speakers: Reid Wicoff, VP, Digital, The Denver Post; Tom
Sly, VP Digital Revenue, The E.W. Scripps Company
Moderator: Kathy Haley, Publisher, NewsCheckMedia
Theater Session: Beyond Cold Web
Heatset, infrared and UV — What is the value of offering
glossy to your clients?
11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Theater Session: Creative Revenue Generation
This is a can’t miss session on the show floor! Join Jason to
hear the latest on getting creative about revenue growth.
Speaker: Jason Taylor, President, Western U.S. Publishing
Operations and President of GateHouse Live and Virtual
Events at GateHouse Media
1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Breakout Session I: Building a Culture of
Innovation in Your News Organization
It’s clear that along with new tools for innovative
journalism, and the knowledge of how to use them, news
organizations need help with the underlying issues of
transformation. Drawing on months of human-centered
design research in newsrooms and other work helping
news organizations implement change, Jeff Sonderman
will explain how human, cultural and institutional factors
either enable or stifle innovation in your organization. Learn
what the research reveals and strategies for moving
ahead.
Speaker: Jeff Sonderman, Deputy Director, American Press
Institute
Breakout Session II: Recruiting the Millennial
Digital Seller
It is a sellers’ market for hiring good talent. Publishers are
vying for talent and millennials are in high demand. They
are the first generation to have full access to digital
technology, communication and publishing. Employers
that better understand what is important to them, what
motivates them and what retains them will be able to
secure them as talent, keep them happy and most
productive.
The panel of millennials all work or have worked with
newspaper publishers. They will provide tips and tactics to
recruit them and share what is most important to retaining
them.
Speaker: Caywood Coleman Yamnik, Channel Manager
Video and Audience Targeting, Alabama Media Group;
additional speakers to be confirmed.
Moderator: Amie Stein, Training & Development Director,
LMA
2016 CONFERENCE PROGRAMMING
2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Theater Session: Product Showcase IV
Join our business partners on the exhibit floor to hear the
latest in product and service offerings.
2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Breakout Session I: Thinking Like a Startup
We all know startups are described as being nimble, able
to operate on a shoestring and being hothouses of
creativity and innovation. How can larger businesses
create and embrace some of the same cultural practices
to foster new ideas and creative work to enable growth?
This session will take a look at some of the practices
startups are implementing right and how we might be able
to adopt a startup mindset.
Speaker: Emily Lowrey, Founder/CEO, Magic City Media
Breakout Session II: The Surprising Business of
Podcasts
Podcasts are gaining wide popularity. They are interesting
to consumers, important to storytelling and can be a quite
profitable business. They are easy to start and extremely
convenient to consume. This panel will discuss how
podcasts can reach very targeted audiences, promote
expertise and generate revenue.
Speakers: Karen Unland, Founder, Seen and Heard in
Edmonton/Podcast Host, Entrepreneur and Podcast Ad
Network Developer; Lex Friedman, EVP, Sales and
Development, Midroll
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Theater Session: PNA LaunchPad
Don’t miss your opportunity to grow your digital revenue
and audience! Participate in PNA LaunchPad, a program
matching vetted tech start-ups with media companies,
offering solutions for video, mobile and much more.
Learn about the LaunchPad technologies and meet the
entrepreneurs behind them.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6
8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Theater Session: Product Showcase V
Join our business partners on the exhibit floor to hear the
latest in product and service offerings.
8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Breakout Session I: Continued Investment in
Production
Major investments continue in the “ink on paper”
environment. Companies have started to make
investments in their production footprint via expansion of
operations, upgrades and ongoing improvements. This
session will provide an overview of some of these projects.
Moderators: Gary Owen, VP, Sales, Mailroom Systems,
Muller Martini Corp.; Mark Grunlund, Director of
Manufacturing, Advance Central Services DE; additional
speakers to be confirmed.
Breakout Session II: Big Data’s Secret Sauce
The big industry buzzword is big data and while we know it
can add value it can also be very intimidating. Big data
can provide numerous insights for publishers in content
creation, marketing and advertising but where do we
start? Where are we seeing ROI and benefit, and can big
data be small enough for small publishers as well? The
panel will share their strategies, lessons learned and best
approaches to using big data in their business.
Speakers: Mark Bullard, Director of Digital Business
Development, Lee Enterprises; Dan Schaub, Corporate
Director of Audience Development, The McClatchy
Company
Moderator: Angie Epps, Managing Director Marketing &
Consumer Insights, Journal Media Group
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Breakout Session I: Virtual Reality and the Fully
Immersive Storytelling Experience
How will virtual reality technology impact and change
journalism? This session will discuss how to get started, what
the opportunities are, as well as what the challenges may
be.
Breakout Session II: The New Newsroom: Making
Money
Newsroom editors can and should help generate new
sources of revenue. Bill Ostendorf will offer up a dozen
ideas that could significantly increase revenue for
newspapers, many of which could be initiated by the
newsroom. More importantly, he’ll help editors learn to
think about revenue in new ways. Rather than push back
when confronted with revenue demands, Ostendorf
encourages editors to embrace, influence and even
control new revenue initiatives and bring their unique
talents and ideas to bear on revenue concepts.
Speaker: Bill Ostendorf, President, Creative Circle Media
Solutions
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Breakout Session I: Success with Native
Native advertising is helping brands create a brand
relationship with consumers, but how is it helping
publishers? Is it beneficial? Is it still risky? Can native help
publishers evade ad blockers? We’ll take a look at how
native is being defined, measured, implemented and in
what forms it is being sold and displayed.
Speaker: John Kane, Director of E-commerce, Morris
Communications
Breakout Session II: How To Make Money with
Programmatic - Why Publishers Should Have an
Overall Ad Exchange Strategy
As concerns grow over the threat of revenue loss
associated with the shift toward programmatic ad buying
the necessity for publishers to have an overall ad
exchange strategy increases. The panel will share
practices they are implementing to choose an effective
approach, maximize inventory and increase profits.
Speakers: Tobias Bennett, LMC Exchange; Kevin Antoine,
Programmatic Manager, The Weather Channel
12:00 p.m.
