NOTES FROM ART APPRECIATION ORIENTATION 9/23/13 MEETING
• Welcome from Emmy Park, Aida Ebeling and Sonja Gerard, Special Art History Advisor Luly
Feliciano
• Introduction from Emmy Park about what to expect from the Art Appreciation Program
• Budget for the year is $25 per class. Turn in your receipts to receive reimbursement for any
materials you purchased for your projects. You may email us for more information at:
artappreciation@puestadelsolpta.org Please use lead-free materials and kid appropriate
materials and craft tools.
• Three large cabinets filled with materials you may use located in the PTA room (next to gym) –
If not open, please go around through the gym and check the door from the inside. Please wear a
volunteer badge. If all doors are locked, please check with the front office and they will be able to
locate someone to help you.
• The cabinets contain lots of paints, brushes, Sharpies, oil pastels, watercolors, paper, etc.
Please feel free to look in the cabinets to see what you could use for your lessons and what you
may need to go out and purchase.
• The cabinets also contain reference books and folders containing project ideas
• Please be considerate and not take a large amount of various materials at a time and return the
materials borrowed for your lesson right after the lesson is completed. We have very limited
quantities and other art parents may need them that day or week for their lesson as well.
• If you do need to use a large array of materials for one lesson – maybe put a note on the art
cabinet that you will need certain materials for a certain date/time.
• Puesta also has our own kiln to use to fire clay projects – please contact us to learn the steps
and procedures on the kiln: artappreciation@puestadelsolpta.org
• Themes and categories for art projects:
–
–
–
Science, bugs/insects, rocks, etc
Passport Club relating to the country they are studying (map design)
Fall, Winter, Friendship Day, Parent Appreciation and so on
• Reflections Project – There will be more information about the program. They are looking for
more volunteers to help with the Reflections committee. So, if you are interested, please visit the
PTA website home page.
• Auction Art Projects – Deadline Dec 20th, 2013. Each classroom will submit an art project to
put up at auction in March. If the Art Appreciation volunteer(s) are unable to make the
commitment please let us know and we will contact the Room Parents to find additional
volunteers to help with just this project: artappreciation@puestadelsolpta.org We will email the
final guidelines after the auction committee has an October meeting. Start brainstorming!
• Aida shared wonderful sample works from previous years and discussed how she developed
class projects for art appreciation.
• Aida mentioned adding a Facebook group (share/post projects and ideas)
• Keep your best projects for Gallery Night in March! Have a sample work from each student.
It doesn’t have to be all from the same lesson (maybe half the class from one lesson and half the
class from another lesson)
• Maybe plan the year ahead for your projects. Such as, Reflections Project first month, Auction
Project second month and so on.
• Luly’s ideas – please stress teamwork and share ideas. Keep it simple! Age appropriate
projects. Maybe use Passport Club countries as a lesson. Write the child’s name on the back of
each piece of artwork and have a step process that is easy for children to follow. Luly likes to
reference concept/techniques verses just imitating art history artwork. Such as, how do you
construct a face?
• Luly also discussed Pot Latch, Culture of Exchange. You trade and exchange materials within
the classroom and create groups to create one group art project out of the exchanged items. You
could also do this between different classrooms as well but takes a lot of planning.
-
Such as, one table setup has popcorn to exchange (representing corn).
Another table would have Swedish fish (representing fish).
Then exchange one portion for another.
Once you have exchanged all the items, have the assigned groups create an art
piece out of those items.
• Maybe have only a 5 to 10 minute mini-lesson on the art background of the lesson and feel free
to ask your teacher to use their PowerPoint software to show examples, etc.
• A volunteer recommended if you have Passport Club theme art projects, please submit your
examples to: passport@puestadelsolpta.org
• A volunteer also referenced http://www.culturegrams.com as a great place for ideas!
• Lastly, please communicate with your classroom teacher preferred dates and times to
have your art appreciation lessons. The teachers themselves also are a great resource.
They have ideas and maybe preferences when it comes to subject matter, etc.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need assistance with Reflections,
Auction or any of your monthly projects. Email: artappreciation@puestadelsolpta.org
