Introduction
RCL thanks you for the opportunity to correlate Faith First® Legacy
Edition Grades K–8 with your diocesan guidelines. In preparing this
correlation, it became clear that the spiral approach to catechesis that is
central to Faith First revealed that concepts required by the guidelines
were sometimes presented earlier, sometimes presented later, and often
appropriately revisited on many grade levels.
To help you understand RCL’s correlation of your guidelines with the Faith
First Legacy Edition, we would like to point out several unique qualities of
the Faith First program.
q The structure of the Faith First Legacy Edition is based upon the
structure of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This structure
applies to each level of Faith First.
q The four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church—the
essential elements of the Catholic faith—are taught at each grade level
in age-appropriate ways. This spiral approach opens the opportunity
for students, catechists, and families to revisit and deepen their
understanding of the doctrines and practices of the Catholic faith many
times throughout Faith First Legacy K–8.
q Faith First Kindergarten provides the children with a readiness for
the study of Sacred Scriptures. The nature and key concepts of Sacred
Scripture are presented over the course of Faith First Legacy Edition
Grades 1–8. One junior high text, Jesus in the New Testament, focuses
solely on the meaning and structure of the New Testament. In addition
to the Scripture stories and references found in every chapter of the
Faith First Legacy Edition Grades 1–8, there are sixty-eight core
Scripture chapters dedicated totally to the study of Sacred Scripture.
This is the equivalent of more than two years of Scripture study
during a student’s eight years of religious education in grades one
through eight.
q Each core Scripture chapter consists of a “Bible Background,”
a Scripture story, and “Understanding the Word of God,” an
exploration of the meaning of the story.
q A special unit with activities and prayerful reflections for teaching the
seasons of the liturgical year—Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and
Pentecost—is provided at every grade level of the Faith First Legacy
Edition.
q The “Our Church Makes a Difference” page in each chapter
of Faith First Legacy Edition Grades 1–8 helps students, catechists
and families discover the difference the Church has made and
continues to make in the lives of Christians and in the world. The
children’s Catholic identity is strengthened as they learn how Catholics
put faith into action.
q The “What Difference Does Faith Make in My Life” pages in
grades 1–8 invite students, catechists and families to discover and value
the difference that living the Catholic faith makes in their lives. These
pages call students, catechists, and families to apply and live what they
have learned.
