IMPORTANT… READ THIS…
Each institution determines which tests they will accept for
credit, how they will apply that credit and what score is
required. The information included in this booklet is for general
information only. It is important to check with your school for
specific information about the test you may be planning to take.
In the case of CCAF, the Kirtland Education Center is your
point of contact.

LEWIS UNIVERSITY NATIONAL TEST CENTER (NTC)
The Lewis University National Test Center is an authorized CLEP,
DANTES, and Excelsior test site. Test sessions are limited. Reservations
online, by phone or in person are required for Lewis University testing.
Study guides and other study materials are available free of charge at the
Kirtland Base Education Center for most examinations. For additional
information, please inquire at the Kirtland Education Center or Lewis
University.
CLEP: College Level Examination Program testing is free to active duty,
reserve, guard personnel and specifically funded civilian DoD
employees. Cost to other eligible civilian test candidates is $80 per test.
Examinees may use a credit card for the CLEP charge at the time of
the testing day registration process. Examinees may also pay using a
certified check or money order for $80.00 payable to “College Level
Examination Program”. The Lewis University NTC also requires a
$30 administration fee using a certified check or MONEY ORDER
ONLY paid to "Lewis University." Retests for failed exams are available
after 180 days and are to be funded by the examinee ($80+$30 admin fee),
including military personnel. CLEP exams are timed at 90 min. with the
exception of College Composition (120 min.) and there is no wrong answer
penalty.
DSST: DANTES Subject Standardized Tests are free to active duty,
reserve, guard personnel and specifically funded civilian DoD
employees. Cost to other eligible civilian test candidates is $80 per test.
Examinees may use a credit card for the DSST charge at the time of
the testing day registration process. The Lewis University National
Test Center also requires a $30 administration fee using a certified
check or MONEY ORDER ONLY paid to "Lewis University." Retests
for failed exams are available after 90 days and are to be funded by the
examinee ($80+$30 admin fee), including military personnel. DSST exams
are timed at 120 min. and there is no wrong answer penalty.
Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) Program: As of September 30,
2011, DANTES funding is no longer available to active duty and reserve

HOW TO PREPARE FOR TESTING
As with any test, being well prepared, well rested and calm enhances your
performance on the test. There are many resources available to help you
prepare for your exams.
Each CLEP, DSST, and EXCELSIOR (ECE) exam has information on
what you can expect to see on the actual exam available at the Kirtland
Base Education Center. These "Study Guides" include a short sampling of
questions similar to ones you may see on the test as well as the answers.
You can check this resource to see if a particular exam is appropriate for
you. In addition to the Study Guides, certain tests have video or audio
material as well as subject area books. These are also available at the Base
Library and will help you prepare to sit for a specific exam. Web sites
listed in this booklet also have exam descriptions, fact sheets, and practice
exams so you can adequately prepare.
It is highly recommended that you review and prepare before you sit
for the test as these exams are the equivalent to a semester of school
and three to six credit hours.
Testing can decrease both the time required to complete your college
program and your out of pocket expenses to fulfill degree requirements. If
you already possess the knowledge for tests selected, you may be ready to
go, but it is still recommended that you review the material.
More good news… in the event that you do not score high enough to earn
credit on your CLEP/DANTES/ECE exam, there is no negative effect on
your grade point average; however, if you choose to retake the exam after
the requisite six months, you must fund the retest.
You may take a maximum of 30 semester hours in
CLEP/DSST/ECE/DLPT5 testing toward your CCAF degree. Other
universities vary this requirement. Please check with your parent
university for their specific requirements.
