An Alien Periodic Table

USE A PENCIL ONLY FOR THIS!!

STRATEGY: CROSS THEM OUT AS YOU FIND THEM / YOU MAY USE A PERIODIC TABLE FOR HELP.

The shortened periodic table below is a small part of the actual periodic table. The following story contains enough information to fill in all the spaces. Read the story then fill in the table using the facts and fictitious symbols below.

Scientist’s on earth have made contact with a distant alien civilization. Communication has begun and scientists are comparing scientific knowledge. We now know that they have an understanding of chemistry and have already learned that their planet is a strange place. They have no examples of “transition metals” in their chemical periodic table. The blank table below represents what theirs might look like. They have communicated many facts about what they know on chemistry. Your job is to interpret the facts and place the symbols they use in the partial table below. GOOD LUCK!

1. The noble gases are known to the aliens as bombal (Bo), wobble (Wo), jeptum (J) and logon (L).

Bombal (Bo) is a noble gas but it does not have 8 electrons in its outer orbit as the other noble gases do. The outside orbit of logon (L) is its’ second energy level. Of the noble gases given, wobble (Wo) has the greatest atomic mass.

2. The alkali metals are xtalt (X), sannow (Sa), chow (Ch) and quackzil (Q) . Pfsst (Pf) seems like it belongs to the alkali family, but this lightest of all elements only shares the same column. Of the alkali metals, chow (Ch) has the lowest atomic mass. Quackzil (Q) is in the same period as wobble (Wo).

3. The halogens are apstrom (A), vulcania (V), and latek (Lt) . Vulcania (V) is in the same period as quackzil (Q) and wobble (Wo).

4. The metalloids are ernst (E), highho (Hi), terriblum (T), and sississ (Ss) . Sississ (Ss) is the metalloid with the highest atomic mass. Ernst (E) is the metalloid with the lowest atomic mass. Highho (Hi) and terriblum (T) are in

Group 14/4A . T has more protons than Hi. The element called yazzer (Yz) could be mistaken as a metalloid because of it’s location, but in reality it is a very lightweight silvery metal.

5. Xtalt (X) has 37 protons. The lightest halogen is apstrom (A). The heaviest element on their planet is eldorado (El) .

6. The chemical makeup of their oceans is very similar to ours. When a sample of their ocean water vaporizes

(evaporates), a colorless liquid can be formed out of the vaporized gas that has molecules which are made of 2 atoms of pfsst (Pf) and 1 atom of nuutye (Nu) . A white solid is left behind after the ocean water is evaporated that is a cube shaped crystal compound made up of the elements sannow (Sa) which loses one electron forming an ion having a 1 + charge and latek (Lt) which gains one electron forming an ion having a 1- charge. The compound formula for this white solid is a real hint! What is the formula? ____________

7. The element called doggone (D) has only 4 protons in its atom. Floxxit (Fx) is a black substance that has 4 electrons in it’s outer orbit and is visibly present in the smoke of a poorly lit flame. Both rhaatrap (R) and doadeer (Do) have atoms with four orbits. Rhaatrp (R) has 3 electrons in its outer orbit and doadeer (Do) has 2.

8. Magnificon (M), goldy (G), and sississ (Ss) are all members of Group 15/5A. Goldy has fewer total electrons than magnificon.

9. Urrp (Up), oz (Oz), and nuutye (Nu) all belong in the same family that gain 2 electrons. Nuutye is the lightest of the group and oz has a lower atomic number than urrp.

10. The element anatom (An) loses 3 electrons in a chemical reaction. The elements zapper (Z) and pie (Pi) both lose 2 electrons. Pie loses them from it’s fifth energy level, while zapper loses them from its third.
