Funnily enough there is also no rest for the Michael Fassbender’s of the world as we
kick off our programme with yet another Fassbender-fest in the form of
STEVE JOBS and what a treat it is to hear Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant words pour out of the
silver screen in Danny Boyle’s latest film. And Steve is quickly followed by CAROL, multi
award winner at this year’s Cannes, which sees I’M NOT THERE director Todd Haynes
paired again with the magnificent Cate Blanchett.

Set backstage at three iconic
product launches and ending
in 1998 with the unveiling of the
iMac, STEVE JOBS takes us behind
the scenes of the digital revolution
to paint an intimate portrait of the
brilliant man at its epicentre.
January the 1st, early morning. The
telephone rings. Murphy wakes
up next to his young wife and
2-year-old child. He listens to his
voicemail: Electra’s mother, sick
with worry, wants to know whether
he has heard from her daughter.
Electra’s been missing for a long
time. She’s afraid something really
bad has happened to her. Over
the course of a long rainy day,
Murphy finds himself alone in his
apartment, reminiscing about
the greatest love affair of his life. A
burning passion full of promises,
games, excesses and mistakes…
Famously taciturn and a recluse
in his later years, Marlon Brando
nevertheless kept an intensely
personal audio diary comprising
many hours of intimate reflections
and recollections over several
decades. Access to these
cassette recordings has provided
renowned documentarian Stevan
Riley (FIRE IN BABYLON) with a
unique opportunity allowing us
to hear Brando talking about his
childhood and adolescence,
the development of his acting
technique and, particularly
revealingly, his troubled and often
tragic family relationships.
“Moving and revelatory.”
THE INDEPENDENT
In STAR MEN four exceptional
astronomers celebrate 50 years
of work and friendship on a return
road trip to the southwestern
United States, recapturing youthful
adventures and recounting each
other’s influences on the most
exciting period in astronomy’s
history. In old age and facing
death, their journey through
memory and the breathtaking
landscape provokes a rich
series of reflections on how their
profound work on the universe
has reflected back on the
individual, affecting their sense of
religious faith, how life may have
purpose, and what is knowable
and unknowable.
Woody Allen’s Miles Monroe,
a health food loving clarinet
players, goes into hospital for
routine surgery and wakes up
200 years later in a future where
eating hot fudge sundaes and
smoking cigarettes are good for
you. Having slept through the
apocalypse, Miles wakes up with
his neurosis still intact. The world is
now an impersonal police state,
where curious men of science,
with no sense of humour or
humanity, ply him for information
about the long-forgotten past.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara – THE SOCIAL NETWORK) is a clerk working in a
Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett –
BLUE JASMINE), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection
sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.
With CAROL director Todd Haynes has created a beautiful adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel,
THE PRICE OF SALT and a powerful companion piece to his 2002 film FAR FROM HEAVEN. The attention to
detail is perfect, the script elegant but most importantly the casting is spot on. Blanchett and Mara inhabit
their roles so perfectly that it is in the spaces between the lines, the glances, the gestures, we find ourselves
truly believing in this love story.
“Haynes crafts a tender, devastating romance but also surveys a battleground of power and control.”

When her heart is stolen by a
seductive stranger, a young
woman is swept away to a house
atop a mountain of blood-red
clay: a place filled with secrets
that will haunt her forever. From the
imagination of director Guillermo
del Toro (PAN’S LABYRINTH) comes
a gothic romance sure to send
chills down the spine of even the
bravest among you.
Follow Chris Cotter, an American
traveler, as he explores a
common migration path through
Ethiopia and into Israel, tracking
the plight of Eritrean refugees.
Chris and his crew visit several
refugee camps, including the
never-before-documented Afar
region. The refugees tell stories
of oppression, torture, and
survival. Searching for solutions,
Chris speaks to various NGOs
and experts, including Assistant
Secretary of State, Anne Richard.
The outlook is bleak, but the spirit
of the Eritrean refugees is hard to
ignore.
During an unexpected truce that
breaks out in No Man’s Land during
the first Christmas of World War I, a
conscripted German opera singer
and his visiting soprano girlfriend
strike up a version of Silent Night
that attracts plaintive bagpipe
accompaniment from a Scottish
padre.
“Work hard, increase production,
prevent accidents, and be happy.”
THX 1138, George Lucas’ directorial
debut, presents a cold, dystopian
future in which individual thought
and love are forbidden. But two
citizens dare to rebel.
Presented in collaboration with
Meeting Point Leeds, these two
screenings explore the image of
journeying and the journeying
of the image in the 21st Century.
Taking lead from the Syrian
collective Aboundarraa’s notion of
‘emergency cinema’ and the long
legacies this inherits we hope to
confront the place of culture in a
state of emergency. Including films
by Sue Clayton, Pratibha Parmar
and William Raban.
BLACK SOULS is a tale of violence
and complex morality passed
down through the generations. The
Carbone family consists of three
brothers, Luigi and Rocco who are
engaged in the family’s illegal drug
business and Luciano who has
remained in their ancestral town
herding goats. When Luciano’s son
travels to Milan to force his way
into the family business his rash
behaviour reignites a bitter feud
with a rival family.
A cryptic message from an unlikely
source sets James Bond navigating
the layers of a sinister organisation

fighting political pressures that

protect.

SLEAFORD MODS: INVISIBLE BRITAIN
reveals how the most relevant British
band in years stuck two fingers
up to the zeitgeist and articulated
the rage and desperation of those
without a voice in austerity Britain.
The film follows the band on a
tour of the UK in the run up to the
2015 General Election, visiting
the neglected, broken down and
boarded up parts of the country
that many would prefer to ignore.
Part music doc, part look at
the state of the nation, the
documentary features individuals
and communities attempting to
find hope among the ruins, with a
blistering soundtrack provided by
the Sleaford Mods.
Hurst’s 1951 adaptation of the
classic Charles Dickens novel
A Christmas Carol is probably
the most famous (excluding
of course the Muppets version
which is wonderful for a whole
other set of reasons) in part
because of Alastair Sims brilliant
take on Ebenezer Scrooge, the
bitter old miser who is given a
second chance by the ghosts
of Christmas past, present and
future.
When film-maker Leila Sansour
returned to Bethlehem in 2005, she
planned to make a documentary
about the Palestinian city she
couldn’t wait to leave as a
teenager. However, her cousin
Carol convinces her to stay and
build upon the legacy of her
father, who founded the local
university in 1973. Realising that
the “Separation” wall erected by
the Israelis is isolating a oncethriving destination for pilgrims and
tourists, Leila and Carol devise a
campaign to encourage visitors
to return to the birthplace of Jesus
Christ and apply for passports
giving them honorary citizenship.
TO THE EDITOR OF AMATEUR
PHOTOGRAPHER revolves around
the testimonies and documents
linked to the complex and often
contested history of Pavilion,
established in Leeds in 1983 as
the UK’s first feminist photography
centre. The film examines a radical
shift in photography whilst also
foregrounding the problems
of presenting history through
archival fragments and personal
recollections.

A big screen adaptation of
writer Alan Bennett’s iconic and
celebrated memoir, directed
by long-standing Bennett
collaborator Nicholas Hytner.
The film tells the true story of
the relationship between Alan
Bennett and the singular Miss
Shepherd (Maggie Smith), a
woman of uncertain origins who
‘temporarily’ parked her van in
Bennett’s London driveway and
proceeded to live there for 15
years. Their unique story is funny,
poignant and life-affirming.
BRIDGE OF SPIES tells the true story
of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a
Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself
thrust into the centre of the Cold
War when the CIA sends him
on the near-impossible task to
negotiate the release of a captured
American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters
Matt Charman, Ethan Coen and
Joel Coen, together with legendary
director Steven Spielberg, have
woven Donovan’s remarkable
experience into a story that vividly
brings his personal journey to life.
Finally we have a return to form
for Johnny Depp in BLACK MASS
as he stars as notorious mobster
James “Whitey” Bulger. In 1970s
South Boston, FBI Agent John
Connolly persuades Irish mobster
Jimmy Bulger to collaborate
with the FBI in order to eliminate
their common enemy: the Italian
mob. BLACK MASS tells the story
of this unholy alliance, which
spiralled out of control, allowing
Whitey to evade law enforcement
while consolidating his power
and becoming one of the
most ruthless and dangerous
gangsters in Boston history.

Does sex make it impossible
for men and women to be true
friends? This is the dilemma Harry
and Sally debate during one
long post college road trip. When
they reconnect years later they’re
no closer to agreeing on an
answer but the debate is some
of the most enchanting, funny
and romantic ever committed to
celluloid. Perfect festive watching.
Hector McAdam is embarking
on his annual journey from
Scotland to a London shelter,
where Christmas cheer and a
turkey dinner await him. But, aware
this might be his last, Hector opts
to reconnect with his past and
reunite with those he left behind.
Life without a home isn’t easy but
Hector is resilient, accepting of
people, and life, as they come. He
meets with friendship and kindness,
disappointment and cruelty,
discomfort and joy. His crosscountry odyssey brings chance
encounters with companions old
and new who need his support as
much as he needs theirs.
“When you’re racing, it’s life.
Anything that happens before or
after is just waiting”
Steve McQueen
In Moscow on the eve of WWI,
medical student Yuri Zhivago
meets the beautiful Lara, setting in
motion a fateful romance that turns
their lives upside down. Featuring
excellent supporting performances
by Alec Guinness, Rod Steiger,
Geraldine Chaplin and Tom
Courtenay (who recently took our
breath away in 45 YEARS), DOCTOR
ZHIVAGO holds at its heart an
intensely human and passionate
relationship, challenged by the
monumental politics of tradition
and war.
Helping his father, a cantankerous
riverboat captain, stave off a
takeover from a wealthy rival,
Keaton finds himself in many a
funny situation in this wonderful
atmospheric comedy perfect for
banishing the post-Christmas blues.
Active stunt work complements
brilliantly observed jokes, including
a cyclone sequence which
manages to destroy the whole town
but leaves Keaton untouched.
“There can be few more satisfying
movie experiences”
THE GUARDIAN
JOY is the wild story of a family
across four generations centred
on the girl who becomes the
woman who founds a business
dynasty and becomes a
matriarch in her own right.
Betrayal, treachery, the loss of
innocence and the scars of love,
pave the road in this intense
emotional and human comedy
about becoming a true boss of
family and enterprise facing a
world of unforgiving commerce.
Allies become adversaries and
adversaries become allies as Joy’s
inner life and fierce imagination
carry her through the storm she
faces in the magnificent story of
family, loyalty, and love.

STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN &
LE MANS is the story of obsession,
betrayal and ultimate vindication. It
is the story of how one of the most
volatile, charismatic stars of his
generation, who seemingly lost so
much he held dear in the pursuit of
his dream, nevertheless followed it
to the end.

THE FORBIDDEN ROOM is Maddin’s
ultimate epic phantasmagoria. Honoring
classic cinema while electrocuting it
with energy, this Russian nesting doll
of a film begins with the crew of a
doomed submarine chewing flapjacks
in a desperate attempt to breathe the
oxygen within. Suddenly, impossibly, a lost
woodsman wanders into their company
and from here we are taken high into the
air, around the world, and into spinning
tales of amnesia, captivity, murder and
vampire bananas.
“Gleeful, hypnotic and totally
deranged... a formal filmmaking
feat and a deliriously heightened
cinephilic pleasure.”
