GUIDE
The Bone
Wedge-shaped segment
from the compact part of a
long bone
The bone of an adult shows a typical
functional structure. The unit of structure and function is the Osteon - the
Haversian system. The Osteons are
arranged in the direction of the maintensions, the pressure- and pullingtensions. Whenever the charge of the
bone changes new Osteons arise
adapted to the new tensions. Thereby
the old Osteons partly are due to
degradation and remain perceptible
as intermediate lamellae between the
main-osteons. Thus the bone has a
"Brekzien" structure. Round the Haversian vessel in the Haversian canal
lamellae of ground-substance are arranged in concentric lamination alternating with layers of bone cells. These
lamellae contain collagenous fibers
which are joined by cementing substance. The fibrils of one lamella are
arranged spirally in one direction, the
fibrils of the following lamella show
a contrasted spiral. Between the
lamellae there are the bone cells
which are flattened and with their
branches they are through the lamellae in connection with the next neighbouring layer of cells. Under the
periosteum of the bone and the inner
enclosteum the outer and inner general- and bone lamellae run parallelly.
Among one another the Haversian
canals are in touch through Volkmann's canals. The Volkmann's canals have no concentric arrangement
of lamellae. In that they are easily to
be distinguished from the Haversian
vessels.
The nutrition of the bone is made
from the periosteum through the
Volkmann's and Haversian vessels.
Larger vessels (Arteriae nutritiae) get
through the nutrient foramen to the
bone marrow.
