Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 Corpus Christi Dear Holy Name Church and Father Klag, Holy Name Catholic School Openings Thank you so much for helping me with my Eagle Scout project! I appreciate all of the hard work done to paint the playground fence, the bike rack, and many handrails. We were also able to mulch a few places in the front of the church. We could never have accomplished so much without the help from you! Thank you also for the many kind donations. The money I received went toward all of these expenses. Any left over money has gone back to Holy Name Church. Thank you again for supporting my project! Holy Name School has a couple of openings available for the 2014-2015 school year. They are in need of a morning aide in the PreK/K room with Mrs. Kent. They are also looking for someone who can come after school and keep the latch key kiddos until they are picked up. If interested, please call Kim Porter at 620-221-0230 or email her at kporter@holynamewinfield.org Sincerely, Rocky Landwehr St. Thomas More, Martyr St. Thomas More was born at London in 1478. After a thorough grounding in religion and the classics, he entered Oxford to study law. Upon leaving the university he embarked on a legal career which took him to Parliament. In 1505, he married his beloved Jane Colt who bore him four children, and when she died at a young age, he married a widow, Alice Middleton, to be a mother for his young children. A wit and a reformer, this learned man numbered Bishops and scholars among his friends and by 1516 wrote his world-famous book "Utopia". He attracted the attention of Henry VIII who appointed him to a succession of high posts and missions, and finally made him Lord Chancellor in 1529. However, he resigned in 1532, at the height of his career and reputation, when Henry persisted in holding his own opinions regarding marriage and the supremacy of the Pope. The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defense of the Church. In 1534, with his close friend, St. John Fisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King as the Head of the Church of England and was confined to the Tower. Fifteen months later, and nine days after St. John Fisher's execution, he was tried and convicted of treason. He told the court that he could not go against his conscience and wished his judges that "we may yet hereafter in heaven merrily all meet together to everlasting salvation." And on the scaffold, he told the crowd of spectators that he was dying as "the King's good servant-but God's first." He was beheaded on July 6, 1535. His feast day is June 22nd. He is the patron saint of lawyers. March for Life If you are interested in going on the March for Life this year please take a moment and sign up! Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 You are what you eat Corpus Christi DAILY READINGS – FOR THE WEEK OF: June 23rd, 2014 – June 27th, 2014 st Most 21 century citizens can quote a raft of nutritional facts: which vitamins are good for skin or bones, which herbal supplements delay the aging process, etc. The media bombards us daily with food conscious advertising, encouraging us to take control of our diet, weight and health simultaneously pelting us with fast food commercials. Watch what you eat is today’s mantra, whether it’s chicken nuggets or slim-fast. Strangely enough, God has the same message for us. We are what we eat. Earthly food and nutrition only fuels the body on its road to eventual death. Too often we preen our bodies, while our starving spirits lay neglected. Today’s gospel calls us to consider anew our spiritual diet. Have we eaten at His table? Do we regularly taste His flesh and blood, or merely stuff ourselves with mortal bread? On this feast of the Body and Blood God tells us that true spiritual food is given freely at His table. Come and eat today He says, and become what you eat. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” Can any earthly diet offer so much? ©Copyright 2009 C L Enterprises June 23rd, 2014 Monday 2 Kings 17: 5 – 8, 13 – 15a, 18 Psalm 60: 3, 4 – 5, 12 - 13 Matthew 7: 1 - 5 June 24th, 2014 Tuesday Nativity of St. John the Baptist 1 Isaiah 49: 1 – 6 Acts of the Apostles 13: 22 - 26 Psalm 139: 1b – 3, 13 – 14ab, 14c - 15 Luke 1: 57 – 66, 80 June 25th, 2014 Wednesday 2 Kings 22: 8 – 13; 23: 1 - 3 Psalm 119: 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40 Matthew 7: 15 - 20 June 26th, 2014 Thursday 2 Kings 24: 8 - 17 Psalm 79: 1b – 2, 3 – 5, 8, 9 Matthew 7: 21 - 29 June 27th, 2014 Friday Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Solemnity) Deuteronomy 7: 6 – 11 1 John 4: 7 - 16 Psalm 103: 1 – 2, 3 – 4, 8, 10 Matthew 11: 25 - 30 ADVERTISER OF THEWEEK Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 Corpus Christi
