Fall 2013
This class section of Math M118, Math M119 will use online homework, using MapleTA, the same software that is used for computer testing in this course.
To get started:
1.
Go to the login page.
The URL is: http://syrup.math.iupui.edu:8080/mapleta/login/login.do
2.
Your login is your university network id (the same login that you use for Oncourse and OneStart).
3.
Your password has been set to the lower case letter p followed by the last 4 digits of your 10 ‐ digit university id number.
For example, if your student id is 0000123456 your password is p3456.
4.
Once you have logged in, you should be able to see the Class Homepage for your class.
Click on the Class Name to enter.
From the Class Homepage, you can:
1.
Select an assignment.
Click on the assignment name.
2.
View your past results for a completed assignment.
Click on “Gradebook” then on “View Past Results.” Click on the assignment name and then “Search.” Your results appear near the bottom of the screen.
You will need to scroll down to see them.
Click on “details” to view your assignment details.
3.
Change your profile info.
Click on “My Profile” above the Logout menu.
You can change the e ‐ mail address the system has for you and/or you can change your password.
MOST STUDENTS SHOULD NOT CHANGE THEIR PASSWORDS.
DO
NOT CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IF YOU ARE LIKELY TO FORGET IT.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL USE THE SAME LOGIN AND PASSWORD WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR TESTS.
YOU ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR REMEMBERING YOUR PASSWORD.
IF YOU CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD, YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT
BE ABLE TO RETRIEVE IT.
MOST STUDENTS SHOULD NOT CHANGE THEIR PASSWORDS.
Homework Policies: Work the problems in the assignment.
You can quit and save your assignment and return to it multiple times; your work will be saved.
You can work the problems in any order, leave some blank, and change your answers as long as you do not click on “Grade.” There is an option to print the assignment and then return later to enter your answers.
After answering each question, you can get immediate feedback about your answer by clicking on “ How did
I do?
” (You may need to maximize the window in order to see this link.) This allows you to see if your answer is correct or not before you proceed to the next question or Grade the assignment.
After you have entered answers for all questions in the assignment and you are ready to grade it, click on “Grade.” You will see your percentage score but not the details
(which questions were correct or incorrect).
You can repeat the same assignment multiple times.
Your best score will count.
All attempts must be completed prior to the assignment deadline.
If you repeat an assignment, you may receive some questions that are similar to, but not exactly the same as in your previous attempt(s).
After the deadline for an assignment has passed, you can see the details of your assignment (which questions were correct or incorrect, as well as correct answers for those you missed).
Most assignments will be due on Mondays at 3 am.
Extensions are rarely granted and are never granted for individual students.
Because technology issues can and will arise, you should work on assignments prior to the deadlines.
Don’t wait until the last hour to enter all of your answers.
A better strategy is to work on a few problems every day until you finish the assignment.
If you don’t click on Grade, you will receive credit for any questions that are answered correctly, so enter answers early and often to avoid tech issues close to the due date/time.
Check the class schedule in the Syllabus and Class Policies folder in Resources on Oncourse for specific assignment due dates.
Technology problems using MapleTA: Most tech issues with MapleTA can be solved by updating java ‐ www.java.com
and/or using a different browser.
If you can’t get MapleTA to work on your personal computer, you will have to use campus computers for your homework.
FAQ: Online homework using MapleTA
1.
Why can’t I log in using my Oncourse/OneStart username and password?
MapleTA is a separate system from
Oncourse and OneStart.
We load your Oncourse usernames into MapleTA, but since we don’t know your passwords, we create different passwords for MapleTA.
Most students’ passwords are the lowercase letter p followed by the last 4 digits of your 10 ‐ digit university id number.
2.
I am trying to open a homework assignment and the system tells me that I need proctor authorization.
What does this mean?
You should not need proctor authorization for a homework assignment.
If this happens, it probably means that you logged into MapleTA from within another program such as AOL or even Oncourse.
Open a fresh browser window using Internet Explorer or Firefox, and copy and paste the url for MapleTA into the window.
This usually solves the problem.
3.
I can open the assignment, but MapleTA won’t let me enter any answers.
Usually this means that your computer is running an older version of java.
To check to see if you have the latest version of java and to update if necessary, go to www.java.com
Most tech issues with MapleTA can be solved by updating java and/or using a different browser.
4.
MapleTA is down and I can’t do my homework.
What should I do?
Close out of MapleTA; then go back to the login screen and try again.
If you still can’t get in, check Oncourse to see if an announcement has been posted by your instructor.
Notify your instructor if no announcement appears.
Then check back to MapleTA periodically to see if it is back up.
Also check for new announcements on Oncourse about system status.
Sometimes the system goes down and is fixed in a matter of minutes.
If you continue to have problems after your instructor or other students indicate that the system is back up, close out of MapleTA completely and then go back in.
Remember, you can drop a low homework score, so if you continue to have trouble, you could use your drop on this assignment.
5.
I have heard that there is a link “How did I do?” that I can click on to see if I answered a question correctly or not but I cannot see this link.
Maximize the window to see this option.
6.
I only completed half of my homework assignment and I do not have time to finish it right now.
Will I lose my work?
No, click on Quit/Save.
As long as you return to this assignment before it is due, your answers will be saved and you can continue with the assignment.
7.
I completed homework 1 and saw my score.
Can I work this homework again for a higher grade?
What if my second attempt results in a lower score?
You can rework any assignment multiples times prior to the deadline.
Your BEST score will count.
8.
I did not get a chance to finish my assignment and the deadline passed.
Now I can’t get back into it to complete it or to click on Grade.
Will I get a 0?
No.
You will get credit for any questions answered correctly and saved prior to the deadline.
9.
I was almost finished with homework 1, when I decided to take a look at homework 2 out of curiosity.
The system says that I cannot open homework 2 without grading homework 1.
What should I do?
Choose the option that allows you to go back to homework 1.
Finish and grade that assignment.
Then open homework 2.
You can have only one open assignment at a time.
10.
MapleTA says that my answer is wrong, but I am sure that my answer is correct.
If my answer IS correct, how can I get credit for it?
Enter your answer in MapleTA and save your assignment.
Then notify your instructor and let him/her know which assignment and which question you are concerned about.
Your instructor can see the last answer you saved for each question and if your answer is indeed correct, can override the system to give you credit after the deadline has passed.
11.
I forgot to finish my homework assignment and when I went to SL070 to take the test, the system forced me to grade my homework before it would open the test.
I don’t like my score on that homework.
What should I do?
Remember, you can rework any homework assignment multiple times.
After you leave the testing lab, open a fresh version of the homework and complete it prior to the deadline.
Next time, be sure that you don’t have any open assignments when you report to the testing lab for a test.
