Introduction

Paper towels are necessary in every home, especially a college student’s, but paper towels can get pricey and many times the quality does not match the price. To let these students know which brand of paper towels is best to use, we have a series of tests and their results on four different popular brands of paper towels which are Bounty Basic,

Fiora, Viva and Great Value. We conducted the following tests:

• Price per sheet

• Number of Sheets per roll

• Absorbency

• Durability

We will decide the best brand using a point system, awarding four points to the best, three to the second best, two to the third best, and one to the worst. We will decide which brand is the best based on the brand with the most points in the end.

1

Overview

We will conduct four tests to determine the best brand of paper towel for a college student. For our experiment, we chose to use the brands Bounty Basic, Fiora, Viva and

Great Value. We first counted how many sheets are in each roll to let the students know just how much of each product they are receiving. The second test is price per sheet, which we conducted by dividing the price of the roll by the total number of sheets in each roll, which gave us the cost per sheet. The third test is the absorption test to inform the student which brand can hold the most dirt and grime for the best possible clean. To conduct this test, we filled a measuring cup with 200 mL of water then submerged the paper towel in the water and toke it out to see how much water was absorbed in the process. The fourth test is durability. College students have tough messes that can be hard to clean and a durable paper towel goes a long way. For this test, we wrapped a saturated paper towel around a sponge and scrubbed a counter top. We counted the number of scrubs it took for the paper towel to tear. In the end, a college student will be able to see which brand best fits their needs.

Test 1: Number of Sheets

You will need:

• Paper Towel Label

Students often care most about quantity over quality. In college, students use paper towels for many things such as parties, cooking, or just cleaning around the dorm or apartment. Because there are many uses, students do not want to constantly buy paper towels. This is why observing which roll has the largest quantity of sheets on the wrapper, as shown in Figure 1, when buying paper towels is important. For testing purposes, we counted how many sheets are in one roll. From our observation and testing we have found that Fiora has the largest quantity of sheets, with 100 sheets.

Great Value has the second most amount of sheets, with 96 sheets. Viva follows close behind, with 68 sheets, earning third place. Bounty Basic has the least amount of sheets, with 48 sheets.

Test 2: Price per Sheet

You will need:

• Price of each brand of paper towel

• Number of sheets per roll

College students often live on tight budgets. When buying paper towels, price is usually the most important aspect. Since each roll contains a different number of sheets, we created a price-per-sheet comparison of each brand. To determine price per sheet, we divided the sale price by the number of sheets listed on each wrapper.

Test 3: Absorbency

You will need:

• 11 x 10.4 inch sample of each paper towel

• Standard measuring cup

• 200 mL of water

• Standard kitchen bowl

When buying paper towels, the most expensive brands are not always necessarily the best. To measure absorbency, we submerged an 11 x 10.4 inch paper towel into a bowl that contained 200 mL of water. Once the towel was saturated, we removed it and poured the remaining water into a measuring cup. We subtracted the amount remaining from the original, 200 mL, to determine how much water was absorbed by the paper towel. We repeated this test three times for each brand to get an average number. Our results showed that Bounty Basic, one of the more expensive brands, actually absorbed the least, while Viva absorbed the most.

Test 4: Durability

You will need:

• 11 x 10.4 inch sample of each paper towel

• Standard kitchen sponge

For our last test, we tested each paper towel’s durability by testing their scrub strength.

In order to complete this task, we wrapped an 11 x 12 inch water-saturated paper towel around a standard kitchen sponge. After wrapping the sponge, we scrubbed it back and forth on a laminate kitchen countertop and counted the number of scrubs it took to tear the paper towel. We repeated this three times for each brand and calculated the average number of scrubs to complete our test of the most durable paper towel. Viva came in first on the durability test.

Conclusion

After all of our testing, we are able to determine the winners for each test and the overall winner. Fiora won Test 1: Number of Sheets and Bounty Basic was last. Fiora also won

Test 2: Price per Sheet; Bounty Basic and Viva tie for last. Viva won Test 3: Absorbency,

Fiora was a close second, and Bounty Basic came in last. Viva also won Test 4:

Durability and Great Value came in last. Fiora ends up with the greatest total points and wins the experiment. Viva comes in a close second while Great Value comes in third.

After the completion of our tests, we concluded that Bounty Basic is the worst brand for a college student and Fiora is the best.

Recommendation

After completing our tests, we recommend Fiora as the best paper towel brand for a college student. Fiora had the best price per sheet and absorbed as much as the popular and more expensive brand, Viva. Although Fiora does not do as well as Viva on both the absorbency and durability tests, Fiora does come close behind and we are believe that

Fiora is the best brand for a struggling college student on a budget. We believe that every test in the experiment expresses what a college student looks for when deciding which paper towel to buy and that Fiora is the best brand for this type of consumer.
