PREREQUISITE: None.
This course is an introduction to the most common software applications of microcomputers
and includes “hands-on” use of microcomputers and some of the major commercial software.
These software packages should include typical features of office suites, such as word
processing, spreadsheets, database systems, and other features found in current software
packages. Upon completion, the student will understand common applications and be able to
utilize selected features of these packages.

This course is designed to familiarize students with the operations of the IBM PC computers,
specifically in relation to operating systems, Windows, word processing, data bases, spreadsheets,
presentation packages and integrated application concepts. The course utilizes Microsoft Office suite
package to provide a limited introduction to the concepts of these areas. This course does not claim to
make the students into experts on any of the topics discussed. Further classes are provided for selected
software should such expertise be desired.
There is no final examination for this course. You will have two exams to complete with
scheduled dates and times.

Students are expected to be honorable in all college assignments. Suspected cases of academic
misconduct are reported to the Dean of Instructional Services. Refer to the SSCC 2010-11
Catalog for specific policies and procedures regarding academic misconduct.
SSCC Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are
registered, to be prompt and to remain in class/lab for the entire time. Attendance will be
recorded at every class/lab meeting. On the final grade report, instructors are required to
identify the last day of attendance for all students who receive a grade of “F” or “U.” Students
who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should
withdraw from the class. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid.
The Standard College Policies apply to all classes at the college and are a part of every official
course syllabus; each student receives a copy when he or she completes the vehicle
registration/waiver procedure. It is also available from the College website,
www.sheltonstate.edu. It is the responsibility of the student to have a copy of these policies and
to abide by them. This class syllabus is intended to give further detail about the policies and
expectations in this class.
