USMC “COMMANDANT’S OWN” DRUM & BUGLE CORPS
WHICH PLAYS FOR THE PRESIDENT AND WORLD LEADERS,
WILL MAKE AN HISTORIC APPEARANCE AT
CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL LANCER FIELD ON
MARCH 13, 2015 AT 9:30 AM
The Drum & Bugle Corps Will Offer a Rousing Free Performance to
District and Community
Carlsbad, CA … The United States Marine Corps’ famed Drum & Bugle Corps,
aka the “Commandant’s Own,” will present a free concert for District families
and the Carlsbad community at 9:30 a.m., March 13, 2015, on the Lancer Field
at Carlsbad High School, 3557 Lancer Way. The event will begin promptly;
Guests must be seated prior to 9:30 a.m. due to respect and dignity for the
performance. This marks the fourth consecutive year the Drum & Bugle Corps
has performed at Carlsbad High.
The 45-minute performance will feature traditional American marching music
and complex maneuvers that are the trademarks of this spectacular group. Also
featured will be the Battle Color Guard of the Marine Corps, and the Silent Drill
Platoon, comprised of a 24-man rifle platoon that performs difficult precision
maneuvers with 10.5 pound M1 Garand rifles with bayonets attached. The
complicated displays of rifle dexterity are accompanied with absolute silence –
no orders or commands are given to initiate the sequence of elaborate rifle spins
and tosses from Marine to Marine.
Media personnel can contact Counselor Brian Ashton at 760-331-5246 or
bashton@carlsbadusd.net for details. Ashton relates, “Due to its busy
regimen, the band schedules only one performance at a public school per
month, per state, and seldom in the same city or state. It is an exceedingly
rare honor for the band to select a public school for one of its
performances. It is doubly unusual to have the group perform four years in
a row at the same school.”

Established in 1934, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps is the only full-time,
active duty drum and bugle corps in the Armed Forces. Due to its historical
connection to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, it is popularly known as
the “Commandant’s Own” and regularly performs with its sister military band
for the President of the United States. In addition to performing annually at
more than 400 events in the U.S. and around the world, members undergo full
Marine Corps Basic Training and are skilled in combat infantry tactics. For
