Build tremendous name recognition -­‐ People pay ridiculous amounts of attention to what celebs are doing or wearing. 2. Enhance your market credibility –A photo or a “thank you” note will turn fans into buyers. End result – money in the bank! 3. How to find the celebrities that will attract your customers – The first thing to remember, is that it only matters who your ideal customer likes……not who you like. The whole reason you’ll want to go after celebs is to attract your customer and hope she wants your product so she can be just like her favorite celebrity. We want to find out as much as we can about the celebs so we can figure out how to target them and get the best results. Here are some things to consider when exploring different celebrities: ü Do they have kids? ü What is their style like? ü Do they have a favorite color? ü Do they travel a lot? ü What are their hobbies? ü Do they have a favorite charity? Why do you want to know about them and what can you do with that? Ø By knowing more about them, you can figure out a pitch that will appeal to the thing they love, or care about most (besides themselves). Ø Knowing as much as possible about them will help you pick wisely and have a better chance of converting them into a fan of you and your line! How do you attract the celebrity? You want to find something to relate to them with. The more it is about THEM, the better chance you have of making a good connection. v For example: If they are really into natural foods, and you hear them talking (online, in a magazine or on TV) about eating organic, they are working on a cookbook, and want to help Michelle Obama create better school lunches, and you create an organic or naturally made product, you could go with this angle. v For example: If you have a kid friendly product line and want to get it to celebs with kids then you’ll want to do a google search on celebs with kids ages XYZ. Try to make it as specific as possible. Equally, you might want to target pregnant celebs if that is your market place. Ø Next, write down any specific details you can find out like how many kids they have, their names, ages, and if preggers, when the baby is due. Ø Then you can target exactly why/what you want to send them. v Another example: If you donate to Breast Cancer research companies (or want to), you can google famous breast cancer survivors and will get many lists of famous faces to choose from. Ø Then again, look at the list you found on google, and pick the people your avatar will respond to and want to be like. Ø Next, write down any specific details you can find out like when they had it, if they contribute to any cancer research foundations, speak at events, and if pink is their “it” color. Example: A private client of mine makes angelically infused jewelry. She researched a few celebs and found that Sandra Bullock is very into angels so she called her peeps, pitched her product saying WHY Sandra might be interested, and they agreed and she sent it off. Simple…..and fast when you have really honed the WHY and what purpose it has for the celebrity. For anyone famous, it falls under that “What can it do for me” category. ***It is important to do this because it makes you stand out among all the other “ ree stuff” they receive on a daily basis. Once you have done your research, and created your master list of celebs, the next step is to get all their information into an excel doc. Ø Next step is to create your letter to the famous person, and their “handler”. How do you choose the gift? Once you know what your celebs are into it is easier to choose the right gift. There are many categories to try to fit your product in when pitching a celeb. ü Consider donating a portion of sales to a celebs favorite charity ü Make your celeb a special personalized product if possible (this is where your research will come in very handy). Use their favorite color, pattern or power animal. You get the point. ü Send something for their child ü Create a mommy and me item ü Does your product relate to a sport they do? ü Are they getting married? Can you send something? ü Going on a honeymoon? ü Do they have a birthday coming up? ü Did they just win an award? What’s next? Become BFFs with the Gatekeepers-­‐ Making friends with the assistant or gatekeeper to the manager or publicist is KEY to getting ahead. They could be the boss tomorrow. They are your way IN, so be sure you butter them up. So after you have created your master list from CAC, you can start on this next phase. 1. Email a short pitch of your letter (that you created from the templates) to the assistant – sum it up in about 4 sentences. 2. Follow up the next day with a phone call if there is no response to your email. You may need to call and email a few times. When you call, you don’t always need to leave a message……the point is to try to get them t pick up, so sometimes it is simply a game of numbers. 3. Once you do get in touch with them, quickly explain WHY you are offering your item, and what the connection is. 4. If you have multiple options, or a size to offer, you can try to get them involved in choosing or guiding you. That can often get them more on your side. 5. If you can afford it and are willing, it’s a good idea to offer the gatekeeper a gift too. a. For example: If it is clothing, then ask what size they wear and offer to send them a “thing” too. for your product, ask if they want to give it as a gift to a friend or family member as you’d be happy to offer them something too. This is the time to get friendly since you know the chance to make a ton of money in sales could be a “clothing item” away if your celeb gets photographed in them! Make sure your product is beautifully wrapped. Do you love getting a spectacular package? I know I do. Take the time to make it a pretty presentation. If you are not a good wrapper, then find a friend who can, or perhaps go to a wrapping place. Send your package via FedEx as people in the movie business will more likely open a FedEx package due to the perceived value… don’t ask me why….it just is. It can be ground…… and this way you can track the delivery. Seal the deal Follow up with the gatekeepers to see if it was liked: Once you send your beautiful package, you must follow up. This is the time to pull on your big girl panties and make a mark for yourself. They are not going to follow up with you…..let’s just be real about that. This is what you are going to do: 1. Follow up by email with the gatekeeper you befriended three days after the package was received. Ask if they had a chance to open their gift (if you gave them one) and when they might get it to “Celebrity Name”. 2. If you don’t hear back, then call them 2 days later and ask the same thing when they answer. If they don’t answer, leave one very brief message and ask if they got your email from XX date following up about the package you sent. 3. If no response again, then keep calling until they answer, but don’t leave tons of messages each day. You can email again in a week sending the same email from #1. 4. Once you do reach them, and they tell you when the celebrity will actually receive the gift you sent, double back to them a week after it was to be delivered, and make sure it was received. 5. 6. Once you know they “got it” – immediately jump for joy and celebrate. Call your BFF and scream into the phone. And then pat yourself on the back for being bold and doing something that seemed scary. 7. Now do it again!! And Again!! How to grow faster with multiple celebrities If your product is loved, consider flooding the market with tons of the item. Think about sending it to other celebs to create an instant trend. The weeklies love trends and love writing about them -­‐ make it easy for them to write about you too.
