Latitude Longitude Lab
This lab requires use of the Heath (Spaulding) Earth Science book found in your classroom. For your convenience, the maps required to
complete this lab are found on pages 2, 3, and 4 of this document.
Make sure you are defining the vocabulary using both the glossary and index of your textbook. Your notebook may be helpful. When in
doubt, use your Chromebook (dictionary.com) to find a definition. The vocabulary section is NOT optional!
The directions of this lab clearly state to answer all discussion questions using COMPLETE sentences.
Latitude/Longitude using metric:
Measured latitude/longitude coordinates are based on a decimal system (10). If a city is located halfway between 41 O N and 42O N, the city is
located at 41.5ON.
Latitude/Longitude using minutes/seconds:
Some coordinate maps use a system including minutes and seconds. Remember that a city found at 41 ON is really 41’00” and a city found at 42ON
has a latitude of 42’00”. A city located halfway between these two coordinates would have a latitude of 41’ 30”.
This lab can be completed at home without having access to the Heath (Spaulding) Earth Science in school!
