COURSE NUMBER: ITSE 1370
COURSE TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO IPHONE (IOS) DEVELOPMENT
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course explores developing applications for iOS based devices
such as iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Course will provide an overview of iOS development
from use of current iOS SDK, to design of applications and industry business practices. Prior
programming experience in either C or an Object-Oriented Programming language is
recommended for this course.
COURSE CREDIT HOURS: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1.0 Create basic template-based iOS applications using current iOS SDK (Scans: F1, F2,
F6, F7, C15, C19)
2.0 Create graphical user interfaces for the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad. (Scans: F1, F2, F6,
F9, C17, C18, C19)
3.0 Identify current issues in iOS Development (Scans: F1, F2, F4, F11, C11, C12, C13,
C14, C19)
4.0 Describe development cycle and approval process for iOS applications. (Scans: F1, F2,
F4, F11, C11, C12, C13, C14, C19)
5.0 Evaluate iOS applications from the iTunes App Store by applying stated criteria. (Scans:

Secretary’s Commission on the Acquisition of Necessary Skills (SCANS)- SCANS skills are a
group of foundational skills and workplace competencies that the Secretary’s Commission on the
Acquisition of Necessary Skills established as vitally important for workplace success in the 21st
century. In Collin’s workforce programs, the SCANS skills are developed and reinforced
throughout the curriculum to provide students with an opportunity to hone these
skills/competencies in the context of their education. Over the course of an entire degree
program, the successful student is expected to demonstrate all of the SCANS skills and

• Speakers or headphones for listening to digital audio or video recordings

iOS SDK.

• Required: iPhone iOS 6 Development Essentials. Smyth (2012). CreateSpace Independent
Publishing Platform. (published through Amazon.com). Available online and as a print copy
but not through the campus bookstore.

• Other books will be used in the course. A list will be available when the class meets. All
other resources will be available through Cougarweb Library E-books Safari Books
Online and will be recommended, but not required.
SUPPLIES/SOFTWARE:
• Required: Current iOS SDK and XCode version. This will require a Mac running Lion
OS to run the current development software (XCode 4.x iOS 6). This setup will be
available in our computer classroom and in the open lab (H120) where we have 3 macs.
• Required: iTunes.
• Optional: Microphone for voice recording and interaction.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Keeping in touch in an online course is critical to your successful completion of the
course. Attendance is taken in this course. To be counted as attending, each student
must submit each attendance assignment before the assignment closes.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This course is 100% online. Blackboard will be used as our virtual
classroom and all assignments, activities and exams are completed and turned in online.
• Activities: All activities have a set due date and will not be accepted late. Discussion
posts and replies, e-mail assignments, iTunes journal, and practice activities are
graded based on successful completion of assigned activity. Activity grade is reached
by dividing the student’s achieved points by the total possible points and multiplying
by 100 to get a percent.
• Assignments: All labs, presentations and projects have a set due date and are
expected on that date. Labs will be accepted past the due date with a -10 point
penalty per day. Extensions to the due date require prior approval of the instructor
and must be obtained before the original due date.
• Quizzes/Exams: Exams will be available for a set period of time and once begun
must be completed within a set time-limit. All exams must be completed online in
Blackboard. No makeup exams will be given.
INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK AND RESPONSE TIMES: Blackboard will be used as our virtual
classroom and all assignments, activities and exams are completed and submitted online.
• Assignment feedback and grades are posted in Blackboard. Activity and assignment
feedback and grades will normally be available within 1 to 3 weeks of the due date.
• Quizzes and Exams that are setup for automatic grading will be graded on
submission. Exams that require manual grading will normally be available within 1
to 3 weeks of closing date.
• E-mail or mail message response should be within 48 hours during the week
(Monday-Friday) in regular semesters. Longer response time may occur during
holiday periods or weekends.
•
WITHDRAWAL POLICY: Students are advised to withdraw from the course if they have not
completed the required work by the "Last Day to Withdraw." Students who do not complete all

of the required work by the end of the course will receive a letter grade based on the work
completed. Note that the professor cannot withdraw you from class. You must complete a drop
form with Admissions and Records to formally withdraw.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Should an instance of Academic Dishonesty (as defined in
the current Collin Student Handbook) occur, the student(s) will be immediately reported
to the Dean of Students and will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment, activity or exam.
