General Meeting Speaker: Danny Slakey
Over the past spring and summer, CNPS staff and chapter
members hiked, botanized, and documented rare plants on
the Central Coast, with particular attention to the Ventana
and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas of the Los Padres National Forest. This project was part of a statewide volunteer
project called the Rare Plant Treasure Hunt. The Wilderness Areas often challenged volunteers with long hikes,
overgrown trails, and hot weather, but rewarded them with
incredible rare plant finds and access to some of the area's
best swimming holes! Danny will share the results of the
Central Coast project, with some stunning photos of the
landscapes and rare plant finds from the trips. Pending
funding, CNPS hopes to continue this project on the Central Coast next year, so it’s a great opportunity for interested volunteers to find out what it’s all about.
Danny Slakey works for CNPS as a coordinator for the
Rare Plant Treasure Hunt project and also as assistant
botanist for the CNPS Rare Plant Program. Before working for CNPS, he studied plant invasion ecology for his
masters degree and worked several seasonal botany jobs
throughout the West.

CNPS HAS A NEW HORTICULTURE PROGRAM DIRECTOR!
Exciting news! For the first time in our history, the California Native Plant Society now has a fulltime staff Horticulture Program Director! CNPS sought a Horticulture
Program Director who can help chart the course of California’s oldest native plant gardening program, and ultimately
selected Susan Krzywicki.
Susan comes from our San Diego chapter, where she
helped to grow that chapter’s amazing horticulture program. She worked to build a successful garden tour, deliver
training symposia, and otherwise engage thousands of San
Diegans in growing native plants. While doing all this,
Susan has also helped other groups (such as Surfrider
Foundation, San Diego County Water Authority, and Port
of San Diego) in their work adopting and promoting California native plant horticulture.
Although they didn't see any fly agaric mushrooms on Lynn
Bomberger's recent 'Fly Agaric Mushroom' field trip, the
group had a good time. Photo by Natalie Hicks

one of our keynote successes. Now, the Horticulture Program is ramping up, and we are looking forward to input

DEBBIE BULGER WROTE A FUN NOSTALGIC BOOK
Debbie Bulger, Conservation Chair of the CNPS Santa
Cruz County Chapter, has written a new book called In the
thrill of the night. This fun-to-read collection of biographical essays takes baby boomers on a stroll down memory
lane. Had David Sedaris been born female in 1942, he
might have written these vignettes. Many of you will remember that Debbie edited the Sierra Club paper, The Ventana, for 15 years. A sample essay is available at
www.lostballoonpress.com.

progress and promise will be at the DoubleTree by Hilton,
San Jose, January 13-17. We have lots of opportunities for
participation in this high-energy event. Help make this an
event to remember by lending your talents. Hundreds of
volunteers make this a great party. If you join a planning
