Assignment: Literary Devices in The Great Gatsby
The purpose of this assignment is to review your ability to identify and explain literary devices. There
are plenty of examples of literary devices in this book, so your examples should be original. If you
don’t feel challenged by this assignment right off the bat, I suggest you select to work with literary
devices that are less familiar to you.
Choose EITHER Option A OR Option B
Option A:
Identify three examples of literary devices in The Great Gatsby. Illustrate ONE of those examples. The
two examples that are not illustrated should be on one sheet of paper and the one that is illustrated
should be on a separate sheet of paper. Make sure your illustration includes the sentence(s) you’re
illustrating. Also, make sure your illustration is ready to be displayed. It will be. Displayed, that is.
Option B:
Identify six examples of literary devices in The Great Gatsby.
NOTE: For both of these options, you need to prove to me that you understand the literary device. For
example, don’t simply write that “the red, white, and blue banners in front of all the houses stretched
out stiff and said tut-tut-tut in a disapproving way” is an example of onomatopoeia. Write that it’s an
example of onomatopoeia because “tut-tut-tut” is a word creation that imitates an actual sound.
