Letter and Number Activities

Parents,
It is so important to reinforce the concepts that your student is learning in
school at home. In this packet you will find flashcards of upper and lower case
letters, numbers through 20, and all of the sight words that your student will
learn this year. Below are different activities and games that you can do with
your student to help them review and retain what they are learning at school.
Number Practice
- Flip through the flashcards and have your student say the number on each
card. If they get it right they keep the card, if they don’t, you keep it. Whoever
has the most cards wins.
- Have your student draw a card and count out loud to that number.
- Have your student draw a card and show you that number using their fingers.
- Use a game board and take turns drawing the number flashcards. The number
on the flashcard is the number of spaces you move. The first one to the end
wins.
Letter Recognition Practice
- Flip through the flashcards and have your student say the letter. If they get it
right they keep the card, if they don’t, you keep it. Whoever has the most cards
wins.
- Give your student a letter flashcard, have them identify the letter, and then
have them find it in a book, newspaper, and magazine. Or, if in the car, on a
road sign or license plate.
- Use a game board and instead of using the game board’s cards use the letter
flashcards. Have your student roll the dice, draw a letter flashcard, say the
letter name on the card, and if they get it correct they move the number of
spaces rolled on the dice.
- Play Go Fish or Memory using and matching the upper to lower case letter
flashcards.
- Have the student find the letters in his or her name along with other family
members’ names.
- Show the student a letter and have them practice writing the letter and the
letter’s partner (capital A with small a)
Letter Sound Practice
- Use a game board and instead of using the game board cards use the letter
flashcards. Have your student roll the dice, say the sound the letter makes, and
if they get it correct they move the number of spaces rolled on the dice.
- Flip through the flashcards and have your student say the letter sounds. If
they get it the sound right they keep the card, if they don’t, you keep it.
Whoever has the most cards wins.
- Place letter flashcards face down, and have your student pick a card. Then
have your student come up with as many words as they can think of that begin
or end with that letter sound.
- Use both upper and lower case flashcards and play Go Fish or Memory, but
instead of saying the letter’s name have your student say the letters sound. EX:
do you have the card with the /a/ sound?
- Say words and have your student pick the card that the word begins with.
- Say words and have your student identify the beginning, middle, or ending
sound of the word.
- Give your student a letter and have them walk around the house and gather
objects, or look in magazines, newspapers, or book for words that begin with
that letter sound.
Read, read, read!!! Read to your student,
and let your student read to you!!!
