Associate or Full Professor in Resilient Civil Infrastructure Systems
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech
invites applications for a tenured faculty position which will contribute to the broadening of the
department’s and the University’s focus on critical infrastructure and resiliency effective August 2014.
The position is anticipated to be filled at the rank of associate professor; however full professor level
appointments may be considered for outstanding candidates. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a
closely aligned field is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the FE
examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable but not
required. This position will be located in the National Capital Region in Virginia Tech’s Research Center
in Arlington (www.ncr.vt.edu/Arlington/).
The successful candidate will have a sound fundamental knowledge of resiliency as it relates broadly to
civil infrastructure and should demonstrate enthusiasm for collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
The preferred candidate will have specific research experience with transforming critical infrastructure
lifelines (transportation, water and wastewater systems, pipelines, ports and waterways) and protective
infrastructure (coastal protection, dikes and levees) into resilient socio-technical systems. This faculty
member will be expected to provide leadership across multiple program areas within the department.
Individuals with experience collaborating with other colleges and departments, particularly the social
sciences and urban planning, are especially encouraged.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to specialized graduate education, sponsored
research, and scholarly work. The CEE Department is comprised of 55 faculty members, with
approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 575 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment
allows the Department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified
students.
