QUICK FACTS - APRIL 2011
The Model School at UWinnipeg’s Collegiate
Background Information

In operation since September, 2008, the Model School is housed in the Collegiate, UWinnipeg’s high school on
campus, located in Wesley Hall at 515 Portage Ave.

The Model School first opened as a pilot project as part of the University of Winnipeg’s broader community
learning mandate. The goal of all community learning initiatives is to break down the barriers to post-secondary
education and provide academic opportunities for students, regardless of socio-economic background.

All students at the Model School have faced barriers that prevented them from reaching their fullest potential.

Model School students receive a full scholarship and are integrated into Collegiate classes and work towards a
Manitoba High School Diploma. 25 students are enrolled from grade 9 to 12.

Costs including transportation, nutrition, registration and supplies are all included in the scholarship.

Potential students are identified and referred by school administrators from local public schools and may also be
nominated by non-profit organizations such as Big Brothers & Big Sisters.

Each student that is accepted into the program is assessed and an Individualized Education Plan is developed
where goals and objectives are identified, ways of achieving the goals are planned and barriers that may get in
the way of achieving academic success are identified.

As well engaging in a rigorous academic program, the Model School students receive additional training in
resume and life skill building activities including coaching and refereeing certification from Sport Manitoba, First
Aid and CPR from St. John’s ambulance and a variety of other seminars and workshops such as Respect
Education Train the Trainer and Cyber Bullying.

Model School students are hired by UWinnipeg’s Eco-U summer camp to work as junior and senior camp leaders
giving them practical, hands on job experience.

All students are enrolled in UWinnipeg’s Opportunity Tuition Credit Account program, where they can earn up to
$3,000.00 tuition credit at the UWinnipeg. They can use these tuition credits upon completion of Grade 12 to
attend UWinnipeg.
