Celebrating the Life and Works of Dr. Jose Rizal. This celebration is integrated into the
community’s annual observance of Philippine Independence commonly known as
“Kalayaan” with a special focus on Rizal’s life and works through a dramatic skit
(Sarswela) by Filipino American Community Council of Michigan (FILAMCCO).

The Order of the Knights of Rizal (OKR) Lincolnland Chapter will hold a dinner
celebration on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Dr. Jose Rizal. There
will be guest speaker, presentations by members of the Chapter and awarding of
medallions to the Chapter’s Kababaihang Rizalista in America members.
The Springfield-based Filipino American Historical Society (FilAmHisSo) and the Central
Illinois Philippine American Society (CIPAS) will present other programs following that of
the OKR.

This annual summer picnic/potluck sponsored by Filipino American Society of Central
Illinois (FASCI) will focus on the celebration of Dr. Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary with a
display of Dr. Rizal’s books, copies of his letters to his family, the singing of “Ang Bayan
Ko” and the reciting of the poem “ARAW NG KALAYAAN” by a member of the Knights of
Rizal.

FANHS-MWC Conference on Filipino American Experience in Missouri (Dedicated to the
150th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal)

A panel discussion concerning the life and legacy of Dr. Rizal will be held as part of the
conference on October 22nd, with descendants of Rizal as panelists, sponsored by Filipino
American National Historical Society – Midwest Chapter (FANHS-MWC). Conference fee

Remembering Rizal: Implications of Rizal’s Life and Work for Filipino Americans
in the 21st century.
This 150th celebration of Rizal’s birthday starts with a screening of Jose Rizal, a
film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, followed by a reading of Mi Ultimo Adios,
a panel of speakers on various facets of Rizal (e.g., Rizal, the physician), and a
general discussion with audience participation, then concludes with light
refreshments and an exhibit of Rizal photos.
