Acct075/124 & Math

MSJC Acct 075, 124 & Math 51, 90, 96 recap
There appears to be a positive relationship between the success rate of passing Acct 124 & a student
passing a specific math course or an equivalent course prior to taking Acct 124 (see chart #1).
The data implies that (1) there is an increasingly higher likelihood of success* in Acct 124 if math 51, 90
or 96 was passed and (2) the likelihood of success increased as the math course increased in difficulty**.
The results were consistent for each of the three semesters under consideration.
*There was a larger percentage point difference between the percent of students that passed Acct 124
& passed a math course (12% for M50, 23% for M90 & 32% for M96) compared to the percent of
students that failed Acct 124 & passed that same math course (10%, 17% & 21%, respectfully).
**The percentage point difference between the two groups increased from 2 percentage points with
math 051, to 6 points with math 090 and to 10 points with math 096.

There was not as strong of a relationship with the data for Acct 075 using all three semesters. SP08 data,
the smallest of the three semesters with only 4 sessions & 13 to 18 students per section yielded a negative
“percentage point difference” of -2 for math 051 & -11 for math 90 (Chart #2a). When I removed SP08 &
only used the two fall semesters the data indicated similar results as that mentioned for Acct 124.
The data indicated an increasingly higher likelihood of success if math 51 or 90 was passed and (2) the
likelihood of success increased as the math course increased in difficulty..
