Orientation
programme
International Student Services (ISS) holds the International Student
Orientation program for new international students at the beginning of the
fall and spring semesters. The program is mandatory for all new
international undergraduate and graduate students, including transfer
students.
ISPS has planned a thorough program that will introduce you to the
University of Arizona (UA) and provide you with assistance regarding the
following: immigration information, academic resources, course registration,
cultural adjustment, UA services and departments, fun social events, campus
tours, housing assistance and more!
To learn more about banking in the US, cell phones, transportation, Tucson
restaurants and more, please take a look at our International Student
Resource Manual to prepare for your experience at UA and in Tucson.

Level of study
Undergraduate and graduate / BA + KA niveau
Undergraduate students need a GPA of at least 7 to get accepted to UA
Graduate students need a considerably higher GPA than 7.
Study programme
In our experience it can be difficult to get admitted to graduate studies right
after finishing your Danish bachelor’s degree. We, therefore, recommend
that you have reached your 8th or 9th semester at the time you begin your
studies at UA.
As an international exchange student, you must register for a minimum of 12
credits (undergraduate students) or 9 credits (graduate students). Never drop
below these minimums or you will fall "out-of-status" with immigration
regulations & could risk visa problems including losing a tuition waiver.
You are, however, welcome to take more than 12 credits (undergrad) or 9
credits (grad). For immigration questions, you can always contact your
inbound exchange advisor or the Office of International Students which will
oversee your J-1 student visa.
Exchange students will register for classes during International Student
Orientation in Tucson after their arrival. Unfortunately, there is NO preregistration before the orientation. To be ready to register, you should
prepare a long list of classes (about 8-9) that you are interested in taking.
You can find a current list of classes by searching the Schedule of Classes.
Please note:
•
International exchange students cannot take classes in any
Business department (Accounting, Administration,
Econimics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management,
Marketing, Management Information Systems, Retail &
Consumer Science)
•
Likewise, the professional programs of Nursing and
Pharmacy do not permit exchange students
•
Finally, some departments require a portfolio or audition
before advanced coursework can be taken (e.g. Fine Arts,
Performing Arts, Media Arts, Music, Dance, Architecture)
Exchange students must also abide by the following Academic
Guidelines:
•
•
Graduate students must enroll in graduate-level classes (500 level
and above) and undergraduate students must enroll in undergraduatelevel classes (100, 200, 300 & 400 level).
Graduate exchange students are not allowed to focus on research at
the University of Arizona. Graduate students that wish to conduct

research should come to the UA through the Office of International
Faculty. Graduate students wishing to do research at the UA must be
sponsored by a UA faculty member.
All classes must be taken for a grade, meaning you must receive an
A - E letter grade. Pass/fail classes cannot be taken by exchange
students.
Exchange students cannot enroll in the following classes as part of
their minimum full-time registration: thesis, dissertation, research,
internship, practicum, supplementary registration, independent
studies, web-based or correspondence classes. Exchange students
must enroll in a full-time schedule of classroom-based courses
Exchange students must maintain a Grade Point Average of at
least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduates and 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for
graduates. A GPA below a 2.0 may result in termination of the
exchange program. Here is a link to understanding how to calculate
a GPA.
Academic year students must have the GPA's noted above to stay a
second semester. If you are struggling in your classes there are many
resources to help you suceed, including the Think Tank, the math
tutoring, and CESL tutoring.
