Allowing religious instruction on school premises in Champagne,
Illinois, was held by the Supreme Court to be an impermissible
establishment of religion.
RTE programs with classes being conducted on public school
grounds – a common practice at the time – had to be discontinued,
affecting a majority of the programs operating in the U.S.
