The prevention and health protection of senile dementia
老年失智症預防保健(英文)
What is senile dementia?
It means a syndrome of organic degeneration of the elderly brain. The decay of intelligence
may interfere with social intercourse and career. The cause remains unknown, and may be
associated with genetic factor. It’s characterized by degeneration of central brain tissue and
shows brain atrophy. Besides, some psychosocial and environmental factors may induce
senile dementia, such as retirement, joblessness, leaving of spouse or children.
Symptoms
1.decreased cognitive function: memory impairment, forgetfulness, regression of judgment
and calculation ability
2.psychotic symptoms: suspicion, delusion, hallucination, disturbance
some serious cases.

Health protection and nursing
1.Provide proper care according to the degree of regression. For example, use a diaper or
arrange training program for urinary incontinence.
2.Restrict the sphere of activities or wearing a name tag is needed to prevent wondering
around or being lost.
3.Stimulate the perception by bright, colorful and vivid environment.
4.encourage exercise, such as gymnastics, jogging, walking fast, swimming and Chinese
shadow boxing. (Taijiquan)
5.Accompany the lonely, withdrawn, self-abased, depressive, or suspicious patients to keep
a sense of security.
6.Do not sleep at daytime. Avoid stimulating beverage, such as coffee.
7.Communicate in simple sentence that is easy to understand. Don’t treat them as a kid.
8.Keep regular daily schedule of the time to wake up, to eat, to take medicine and exercise.
Remind them frequently about accurate time or a place.
How to prevent senile dementia by Chinese medicine ?
1.Keep optimistic: avoid emotional excitement like rage or sorrow. Take constrictive life
style, have good interest and hobbies.

3.Dietary nourishment: High protein, vitamins and cellulose. Low cholesterol, fat, sugar
and salt.
4.Exercise and work out: Exercise may increase the level of endorphin, which makes
people euphoria.
5.Brainstorming: playing chess, reading and playing computer games keep our mind
running. It avoids early regression of our brain.
6.Take nourishing food which are full of DHA, lecithin , vitamin C and vitamin B and
different kinds of vegetables to build up the health of brain.
Massage by myself
1.Use 2nd to 5th fingers to press from front head to lateral side, it can fresh your mind and
eyes.
2.Press between your eyebrows(印堂穴)20-30 times by 2nd and 3rd fingers of both hands.
3.Rub your bilateral temples by both index fingers for 1 to 2 minutes. It can improve your
blood circulation of the brain, delay brain aging and release fatigue.
4.Comb your head 3-5 minutes by five fingers. It can increase the blood supply of scalp,
improve intracranial circulation.
5.Rub your temples by both index fingers; rub it clockwise and counterclockwise for 7-8
minutes to relax your mind and eyes.
6.Knock your scalp from front to back for 2-3 minutes with your fingers separate naturally.
