Chapter 5: Identity
Use your notes only to answer the following questions. Fully answer all questions on a
separate sheet of paper. Remember to use complete sentences. Each question will
require you to understand a geographic concept and then apply that concept by
explaining a specific example. Terms are in bold.
1. Identify two American cities that are discussed in this chapter and explain to what
extent they are racially segregated. Give three possible reasons why some
American cities remain racially segregated.
2. Define succession. Discuss examples of succession from New York City and
Southeast Los Angeles.
3. Define ethnicity. Using an example, explain how ethnic identities vary with a
change in location or a change in scale. (Contrast the ethnic identity of SwissAmericans with that of Swiss citizens, or contrast the ethnic identity of South
Asians living in Fairfax, Virginia, with that of South Asians living in Pakistan or
India.)
4. Define cultural landscape. Explain how the cultural landscape of Northern
Ireland reflects the power relationships between Protestants and Catholics in some
neighborhoods.
5. Explain how some occupations can be gendered. Discuss an example of a type of
work that is considered “woman’s work” in one place but “man’s work” in
another.
6. Define gross national income (GNI). Explain what kinds of work performed by
women is not included in a country’s GNI. How would GNI change if it included
a fuller assessment of women’s economic contributions?
7. Discuss how power relationships are embedded in the culture of each of the
following places. (In each case, consider how power relations and place affect
each other.)
