233.13 INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER USAGE II (3 Credit Hours)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the advanced features of the four key individual Microsoft (MS) Office 2003 software applications
(Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and the integration of each application to the others. It is designed for students with
basic competency in MS Office suite 2003 as covered under 233.12 (Introductory Computer Usage I).
Prerequisite: 233.12 or consent of the instructor.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
The primary objective of this course is for the student to develop competency in using the advanced features of the four key
MS 2003 office software applications, including the techniques for integrating each MS application to the others. The more
specific objective set for each application is as follows:
MS WORD 2003: The student would develop proficiency in using advanced Word features such as Desktop
Publishing, Form Letters, Mail Merge, Templates, Advanced Formatting, Table Formatting and Charting, Advanced
Headers and Footers, Tracking-Reviewing-and-Merging documents, Outlines, and techniques for integrating Word with
other MS applications.
MS EXCEL 2003: The student would develop competency in employing Excel‟s Financial Functions, and Excel‟s
database capabilities for Creating-Maintaining-Sorting-Querying a Database; and should become proficient in Creating
Templates, working with multiple worksheets/workbooks, as well as integrating a worksheet to Word and the Web.
MS ACCESS 2003: The student would learn the following: creating custom Reports, Forms and Queries; enhancing
Forms with OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) Fields, Hyperlinks and Subforms; Creating and running/using
Macros, PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Switchboard systems.
MS POWERPOINT 2003: The student would develop proficiency in (a) Integrating data from Excel and Word, (b)
Enhancing slides and slide show presentation, and (c) using PowerPoint‟s „Broadcasting‟ and „Reviewing‟ features.
Learning to use the advanced features of the MS 2003 software effectively requires consistent hands-on practices.
Therefore to achieve the course objective, the course will be conducted entirely in the computer laboratory using a
combination of demonstrations, lectures, discussions, student‟s self-paced work, and projects. A sizeable portion of most
lab times will be dedicated to student‟s self-paced work with the professor available to assist the student. This course is
limited to 20 students, to ensure that each student has access to a computer.
The course objective would have been achieved when the student is able to do the tasks described under “what you should
know” on the text‟s pages cited under the course outline section of this syllabus.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Classes: All classes will be conducted in the computer lab in a double-block on Wednesdays (9:50–11:05a, 11:10a–12:25p),
as specified in the schedule outlined in this syllabus. There will be no classes on the following dates due to the reasons
specified:
October 8, 2007 (Thanksgiving)
October 18 (Lecture Series)
November 1, 2007 (Mission Conference)

Homework: “If you really wish to learn, then you must mount the machine and become acquainted with its tricks by actual
trial” Wilbur Wright. In order to succeed in this course student will have to put in additional time in and out of the lab to
complete their assignments and projects and to reinforce what has been learned in the lab.
Projects: There will be four projects, one for each of the four MS Office 2003 applications: Word, Excel, Access, and
PowerPoint. Projects are due by 12:00noon on the due date indicated in the schedule. Each project is worth 10% of the total
course mark. It is expected that the student would begin work on the various aspects of each project as the material related
to it is covered in the lab. Late submission is subject to a penalty of 10% of the project mark per day. Any project that is
more than one week late would be rejected and the student assigned 0% for that project.
“Data Files”: The “Data Files” for homework, projects and In-the-Lab exercises are located in the folder called “Data Files
- Computer Usage II - (C233-13)” on the desktop of each computer in the computer lab. Students are allowed to transfer this
folder to their own storage device and then to their laptop. Students may also download the data files directly from the
text‟s website by following the process outlined below (which you would be shown in the lab):

Click “Run” on the „File Download‟ dialogue box
Click “Run” on the „Internet Explorer‟ dialogue box
When the “WinZip Self-extractor” dialogue box comes up,
o Click “Browse” and select the folder in which you intend to Unzip the file into
o Click “Unzip”, (then click “OK” once unzipped)
Tests: There would be two tests. Each test carries 10% of the total course mark, and would be written in the last 30minutes
of the lab time on the dates specified in the schedule. Please ensure you have your name and student number on your papers.
In addition to constant practice, Practice Test (www.scsite.com/off2003) and Quick Reference Summary (e.g.
www.scsite.com/wd2003/qr) may be useful in improving proficiency and in preparing for tests and exams.
Mid-semester exam: This one-hour exam will be held on Wednesday October 31st 2007 during the last one hour of the
regular lab time. Please ensure you have your name and student number on your exam paper.
Final Exam: The final exam is a two-hour exam and would be held on Wednesday December 12th 2007 (11:00a-1:00p) in
the computer lab. Please see College exam schedule to confirm date and time. This exam is designed to test the student‟s
proficiency level on all the four MS Office 2003 software applications: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Missed Tests/Exams: The professor would consider making alternative arrangements for exams and/or tests, only under
very exceptional circumstances (such as certified illness or bereavement, and other reasons that the College normally
accepts for missed exams). Failure to request a make-up test within a day of the test may result in ineligibility for a makeup test and a mark of zero for that test. As for missed exams, general College rules regarding rescheduling exams apply (for
details, see the College‟s „Early Leave Policy‟ in the College catalogue).
Class Attendance Policy: It is obvious that attendance and punctuality are crucial. Five percent of the total course mark is
assigned for attendance; and absenteeism or late will result in loosing part or all of the 5% mark. Please note that leaving the
laboratory early can be disruptive to others. Therefore, any student who has a legitimate reason for leaving the lab early
should inform the professor at the beginning of the class.
Student use of information and communication technologies for purposes other than class note-taking is not allowed in the
classroom, as students are expected to give their total attention to class activities. Use of cell-phones or ipods is never
appropriate in the classroom, and use of laptop computers to play games, chat with others, browse the internet, or engage
material not related to the class is always distracting to classmates and disrespectful to the instructor and classmates. Unlike
some other post-secondary institutions, Providence has not yet found it necessary to ban laptops from the classroom, or
prevent wireless internet access in classrooms. Only judicious use of them will keep it that way.

Plagiarism (i.e. passing off someone else‟s work as one‟s own), and Cheating (i.e. dishonest or attempted dishonest
academic practice during tests/quizzes or exams or in the preparation of other course work) are serious offenses subject to
academic penalties and other disciplinary measures. All allegations or resemblance of plagiarism or cheating will be
investigated. Where a prima facie case of plagiarism or cheating is established, the College authority will be notified for
further investigations and actions. A student found guilty of plagiarism or cheating may lose part or all of the term marks for
