Dear Colleague,
The Neuropsychological Assessment Battery® (NAB®) was developed over a 7-year period as a response to the
lack of an integrated battery of assessment instruments capable of providing rich amounts of data in a relatively
brief administration time. The NAB was funded, in part, through grants from the United States National Institute
of Mental Health (1 R43 MH58501-01, 2 R44 MH58501-02) and guided in content and format by a national
survey of neuropsychological assessment needs as well as by the NAB Advisory Council. As a comprehensive
neuropsychological test battery, the NAB was designed to be used in a variety of situations including outpatient
examination, research studies, forensic examinations, and many other clinical and research applications.
Since its original publication, the NAB has proven invaluable to neuropsychologists and patients with a variety of
clinical questions. In recent years, it has become clear to us that due to popular demand, certain tests from the fullR. Bob Smith III, PhD
length measure could provide excellent clinical utility as stand-alone instruments. Since the NAB was devised to be
Chairman and CEO
a flexible battery, this seemed like an ideal way to break up the battery for those who were simply interested in one
or two tests or who were looking to try out a few tests before investing in the full battery. This brochure will show you the many ways you can use the NAB—
as a full-scale battery, as a targeted module, or as an individual test, providing you with the most flexible and personalized assessment of many aspects of
neuropsychological functioning. If you have not already tried one of the NAB tests, we encourage you to do so. If you have already used some of the NAB
individual tests, you may be interested in purchasing one or more of the NAB modules. Our Customer Support Specialists are available to help you decide on
the most effective way for you to use the NAB in your practice.
As always, thank you for your business and your support.
Sincerely,
R. Bob Smith III, PhD, Chairman and CEO
P.S. Each NAB module kit comes with the NAB Scoring Portfolio (NAB®-SP) and a NAB Training Program DVD to help you quickly learn how to administer
and score the NAB modules. Like all PAR products, the NAB family of tests are sold with the same No-Risk Guarantee we have honored since our company
began: “If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, we will accept the return of any item.”
How Can I Use the NAB in My Practice?
Seven Major Administration Approaches for the NAB
Administration Approaches Using the NAB
Examples of When to Use a Specific Approach

The NAB Provides an Efficient, Comprehensive Assessment
of Attention, Language, Memory, Spatial Processing,
and Executive Functions in Less Than 4 Hours...

NAB Record Forms include all
necessary administration and
scoring instructions, eliminating
the common difficulty imposed by
having to refer to separate test
administration manuals for
administration and scoring
instructions.
Purpose: Assess a wide range
of cognitive skills and
functions
The NAB is a comprehensive, modular battery of 33 neuropsychological tests developed to assess a wide array of
cognitive skills and functions in adults (ages 18-97 years)
with known or suspected disorders of the central nervous
system. The NAB consists of six modules: a Screening
Module and five domain-specific modules—Attention,
Language, Memory, Spatial, and Executive Functions.
Each of the six NAB modules is self-contained and may
be administered independently of the other modules.
The NAB now may be purchased by individual module
kits versus packaged as a complete kit, allowing the
clinician increased flexibility to focus on specific areas
of concern. Additionally, each NAB module has two
equivalent, parallel forms (Form 1 and Form 2) that were
created and normed simultaneously with identical task/
content specifications and development methodology.
Equivalent forms of the NAB were developed to facilitate
reevaluation while simultaneously avoiding practice
effects that often limit interpretation of other test forms
with no adequate equivalent forms. The two forms have
excellent equivalent-form reliability, as well as good
temporal stability for a 6-month test-retest interval.
Each of the five domain-specific NAB Modules includes
a Daily Living test designed to be multifactorial in nature
and related to real-world tasks of everyday living. Daily
Living assessments include such tests as a Bill Payment
test to help determine difficulties with auditory and
reading comprehension, writing skills, simple calculations, and speech output; a Medication Instruction test to
help determine if an individual can learn and remember
dosing instructions for medications prescribed by his/
her physician; and a Judgment test that helps evaluate
problem-solving capabilities, knowledge of important
aspects of home safety and health/medical issues, and
decisional capacity.

NAB Modules Provide the Flexibility Needed to Help
You Meet the Time Constraints and the Different
Areas of Clinical Focus Required for Each Individual
Development of the NAB was made possible and funded in part by Grants 1 R43
MH58501-01 and 2 R44 MH58501-02 from the National Institute of Mental Health.
• The NAB Screening Module helps to generate initial hypotheses regarding
differential diagnosis and treatment recommendations and provides an
estimate of the examinee’s functioning in a particular domain when more indepth examination is either not warranted or not possible. It takes 45 minutes
to administer.
• The NAB Attention Module provides a marker of an individual’s attentional
capacity, working memory, psychomotor speed, selective attention, divided
attention, and information processing speed. Examination of an individual’s
performance on the NAB Attention Module will provide clinically useful
information for patients with traumatic brain injury; disorders involving the
subcortical, frontostriatal systems, and/or brainstem (e.g., Parkinson’s disease,
Huntington’s disease, HIV-associated cognitive-motor disorders, multiple
sclerosis); anxiety disorders; and adult residual attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder. It takes 45 minutes to administer.
• The NAB Language Module provides a marker of the severity of aphasia and
related disorders of language production, comprehension, and word-finding.
Examination of an individual’s performance on the NAB Language Module
will provide clinically useful information for patients with expressive/Broca’s/
nonfluent aphasia, receptive/Wernicke’s/fluent aphasia, or anomia. It takes 35
minutes to administer.
• The NAB Spatial Module provides a marker of the examinee’s visuo
perceptual skills, attention to visual detail, visuoconstruction, right-left
orientation, topographical orientation, and visual scanning. Examination of
an individual’s performance on the NAB Spatial Module will provide clinically
useful information for patients with a lesion in the right hemispheric parietal
lobe, frontal systems involvement, and/or occipital lobe involvement. It takes
25 minutes to administer.
• The NAB Memory Module provides a marker of an individual’s verbal explicit
learning, visual explicit learning, verbal delayed free recall, visual delayed
recognition memory, and verbal explicit learning and recognition of information
likely to be encountered in day-to-day living. Examination of an individual’s
performance on the NAB Memory Module will provide clinically useful
information for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia,
strokes or aneurysms involving the anterior communicating artery, hypoxia/
anoxia, Korsakoff’s syndrome, traumatic brain injury, neurotoxic exposure,
electroconvulsive therapy, major depression, mesial temporal sclerosis,
herpes encephalitis, and other lesions (e.g., vascular, degenerative, epileptic,
neoplastic, traumatic, metabolic, surgical) involving mesial temporal lobe
structures. It takes 45 minutes to administer.
• The NAB Executive Functions Module provides a marker of planning,
engaging with others effectively, problem solving, successfully interacting
with the environment to get one’s needs met, judgment, conceptualization,
cognitive response set, mental flexibility, verbal fluency, and generativity.
Examination of an individual’s performance on the NAB Executive Functions
Module will provide clinically useful information for patients with traumatic
brain injury, stroke, tumor, hypoxia/anoxia, degenerative disease (e.g.,
Parkinson’s disease, Pick’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Huntington’s
disease, advanced Alzheimer’s disease), attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder, depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, metabolic
disorders (e.g., Graves’ hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism), and other lesions
(including vascular, degenerative, epileptic, neoplastic, traumatic, metabolic,
surgical). It takes 30 minutes to administer.

Each NAB Module Has Two Equivalent,
Parallel Forms to Facilitate Reevaluation
While Avoiding Practice Effects...
NAB Scores
Depending on which modules are administered, the NAB yields a variety
of different scores. Each NAB test (with the exception of the Screening and
Attention Modules Orientation test and the Language Module Reading
Comprehension test) results in one or more primary test scores and, in
some cases, additional secondary and/or descriptive test scores. For the
Screening Module, selected primary test T scores are summed to obtain
each of the Screening Domain scores (e.g., the two Screening Language
test scores compose the Screening Language Domain score). The five
Screening Domain scores are summed to obtain the Total Screening Index
score.
For each main module, a module Index score is calculated from the sum
of selected primary T scores from that module; this score summarizes the
examinee’s performance on that module. The Total NAB Index is based on
the sum of the five main module Index scores, representing the examinee’s
overall performance on the NAB. The Neuropsychological Assessment
Battery® Software Portfolio (NAB®-SP) provides unlimited scoring and
report generation after hand-entry of an individual’s NAB test scores.
NAB Reliability and Validity Studies
In addition to the standardization study of more than 1,400 adults, the
NAB has undergone extensive reliability studies, including equivalent form,
interrater, 6-month test-retest, and internal consistency.
The two forms of the NAB were found to be highly equivalent in an
equivalent-form reliability study (n = 50). Interrater reliability studies conducted on those NAB tests that require more subjective scoring indicated
excellent agreement. A 6-month test-retest study (n = 95) resulted in very
good temporal stability and provides important practice-effect information.
Internal consistency analyses also indicate excellent reliability. The reliability
estimates for the NAB Index scores are excellent. For example, the reliability coefficient for the Total NAB Index score is .96.
Extensive validation evidence has been established through both
exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, criterion validity investigations, and several clinical validation studies (including separate studies
involving groups of patients with dementia, aphasia, traumatic brain injury,
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, multiple sclerosis, and HIV/AIDS).
Additional validity studies included a comparison of the NAB with measures
of functional independence in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital and an
investigation involving a group of simulated malingerers who received the
NAB, along with several existing measures of symptom validity.
Using the NAB in Your Practice
As a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, the NAB is appropriate for outpatient evaluation, forensic examination, large-scale research
studies, and many other clinical and research applications. Because of its
modular flexibility, its potential for focused and shorter examination times,
and the ability to use the Screening Module on its own, the NAB also
is appropriate for inpatient bedside consultations, interdisciplinary team
evaluations, memory disorder clinic examinations, and focused research
investigations, among other purposes.
The NAB allows for both flexible battery and fixed battery approaches to
assessment. You can administer the entire NAB, selected modules, or individual NAB tests based on specific needs, examination focus, and referral
question(s). Standardized administration and scoring procedures across all
tests enhance the consistency and interpretability of test scores. The NAB
is unique among modern neuropsychological test batteries in that all of the
tests in all of the modules have been co-normed on the same individuals.
NAB Software Portfolio (NAB-SP)
The NAB-SP automates many of the steps involved in calculating raw
scores as well as obtaining normative scores (e.g., z scores, T scores,
percentiles) and generating profiles, all in a fraction of the time required by
hand scoring. It includes built-in, easy-to-use report editing features, and it
generates profile graphs with the ability to overlay profiles from prior NAB
administrations for a specific client. Reports can be exported to common
word processing programs, and client data can be exported to many
spreadsheet and database programs.
The NAB-SP now includes the NAB Main Modules Primary Score Report.
Visit www.parinc.com to download a patch for your existing NAB-SP to
enable it to produce this report.
NAB Training Program on DVD
The Training Program on the Administration and Scoring of the NAB
Module Kit is designed to facilitate learning the correct administration
and scoring procedures for the NAB Module you have purchased. The
specific module DVD contains an overview of the module you ordered; it
is organized into chapter titles that correspond to the individual tests within
the module, thus facilitating easy navigation to information about a specific
test. Each chapter includes an overview of the specific test followed by a
demonstration of a standard administration. Procedures for recording and
scoring responses also are described. A set of completed NAB Record
Forms and Response Booklets for the specific module you ordered, corresponding to the actual administration shown in the video clips, is included
with the DVD set. In addition, the Screening Module DVD is included as a
complimentary bonus because it includes an overview of the entire NAB.
Together, these materials facilitate learning the correct administration,
recording, and scoring procedures.

NAB® Naming Test™
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
Formerly available only as part of the NAB Language Module, the NAB Naming Test now is available as a standalone assessment. This instrument is designed to highlight deficits in visual confrontation naming skills and to identify
aphasia. Additionally, it may be helpful in evaluating progress in aphasic patients who are undergoing rehabilitation.
The examinee is shown a series of images and asked to name the object in the picture.
Unlike other visual confrontation
instruments, the NAB Naming Test
is sensitive to naming deficits
but has also shown stability
across examinees’ levels of
educational attainment.
Purpose: Evaluates an
individual’s naming
abilities and facilitates
identification of
aphasia
Age: 18-97 years
Admin: Individual
Time: 10-15 minutes
Qualification Level: B or S
• Brief 31-item assessment quickly provides necessary information.
• A detailed Record Form guides you through semantic and phonemic cueing, if necessary, to further evaluate the patient’s
abilities. All of the administration instructions and essential scoring information are included on the Record Form, making it
easy to administer in clinical settings.
• An equivalent parallel form reduces the likelihood of practice effects and allows for repeat testing, making the NAB Naming
Test ideal for use in speech/language and/or rehabilitation settings where progress is monitored over the course of treatment.
• A new stand-alone Professional Manual contains information regarding the NAB Naming Test’s background, administration,
interpretation, standardization, reliability, and validity.
• The NAB Naming Test was standardized using a large, demographically corrected normative sample.
• The incorporation of digital photographs enhances the ecological validity of the instrument by providing visual depictions that
appear more realistic than the line drawings used by similar instruments.

NAB® Screening Module Kit
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
The NAB Screening Module helps to generate initial hypotheses regarding differential diagnosis and treatment
recommendations, and provides an estimate of the examinee’s functioning in a particular domain when more in-depth
examination is either not warranted or not possible.
Average alpha coefficients for test scores from both Form 1 and Form 2 of the Screening Module range from moderate
to strong. Composite reliabilities are high for all of the Screening Module Domain scores (e.g., Screening Attention

The NAB Memory Module Provides You
With a Significant Competitive Edge for Less...
NAB® Memory Module™ Kit
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
Now available as a complete stand-alone kit, the NAB
Memory Module measures explicit verbal and visual
learning and memory through four primary tests: (a) List
Learning, (b) Shape Learning, (c) Story Learning, and
(d) Daily Living Memory. One of the five main modules of
the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery®, the NAB
Memory Module is ideally suited to stand on its own as a
comprehensive assessment of memory complaints that
involves testing of encoding skills, retention, retrieval, and
recognition. Each skill set in the NAB Memory Module
represents an important area of possible cognitive
impairment with potentially differing etiologies, whether
due to neuropsychological disorders or normal age
effects, and differing associated treatment and management strategies. Discrepancies in performance among
these areas may shed light on the exact deficit present
in the individual. Economical and efficient, the module
was designed to be an extensive memory and learning
skills evaluation, with typical administration taking only
45 minutes.
Special Features of the
NAB Memory Module
• New Professional Manual focuses only on the Memory
Module and includes new research completed since its
initial release as part of the comprehensive NAB.
• Detailed Record Forms are designed to guide you through
administration with ease. Stimulus Books are durable,
colorful, and easily portable.
• Hierarchal score structure (i.e., index, primary, secondary,
and descriptive scores) allows for detailed interpretation of
results.
• Base rates of reliable change scores and critical values
enable you to track progress or decline over time.
• The Training DVD enables you to quickly learn how to
administer and score the measure.
• The NAB Memory Module Scoring Program (NAB Memory
Module-SP) automates scoring and score conversions
(e.g., raw scores to z scores, z scores to T scores, T scores
to percentiles) and generates Score Summary Tables and a
Scoring Profile.
• An equivalent parallel form reduces the likelihood of
practice effects and allows for repeat testing to evaluate
progress during or following rehabilitation.
• Examination of an individual’s performance on the NAB
Memory Module provides clinically useful information for
patients with Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia,
strokes or aneurysms involving the anterior communicating
artery, hypoxia/anoxia, Korsakoff’s syndrome, traumatic
brain injury, neurotoxic exposure, electroconvulsive
therapy, major depression, mesial temporal sclerosis,
herpes, encephalitis, and other lesions (e.g., vascular,
degenerative, epileptic, neoplastic, traumatic, metabolic,
surgical) involving mesial temporal lobe structures.
• The composite reliability coefficient for the Memory Index
is .93. Over a 6-month interval, test-retest reliability of the
secondary scores was strong, with the median percentage
agreement coefficient for correct classifications at 91.6%
based on both age groups.
• To examine convergent validity, a subgroup of the
standardization sample was assessed with selected
criterion measures of memory, including the Wechsler
Memory Scale®–3rd Ed. (WMS®-III), the California Verbal
Learning Test®, 2nd Ed. (CVLT®-II), and the Repeatable
Battery of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS™).
• Among a sample of patients with dementia, Memory
Module primary and index scores correlated highly with the
Dementia Rating Scale–2™ (DRS‑2™) Memory subscale
age-corrected scale score (e.g., Daily Living Memory
Delayed Recall r = .88). In addition, the Memory Index
correlated highly with the DRS-2 Memory subtest raw
score (r = .85).

NAB® Writing Test™
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
The NAB Writing Test was created to quantify several major features of narrative writing, including legibility, syntax,
spelling, and conveyance of themes. Unlike other writing tests that simply ask the examinee to write a single sentence,
the NAB Writing Test provides a more complete sample of the many types of deficits associated with agraphia. The
measure presents examinees with a colorful stimulus picture printed on a panel card and asks the examinee to write
about what is going on in the scene. Scoring is relatively simple, yet provides sensitive markers of legibility, syntax,
spelling, and conveyance, increasing the likelihood of identifying possible deficits.
• The detailed Record Form guides examiners through the measure. The Record Form and Panel Card are all that is necessary
for administration, allowing optimal portability and flexibility in a variety of evaluation settings.
• Two equivalent, parallel forms allow for ease of retesting and reduce the likelihood of practice effects.
• The NAB Writing Test is one of six tests in the NAB Language Module, which serves as a marker of the severity of aphasia
and related disorders of language production, comprehension, and word-finding.
Unlike similar writing
measures, the NAB Writing
Test provides both a qualitative
and a quantitative measure of
specific aspects of writing.

NAB® Auditory Comprehension Test™
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
The NAB Auditory Comprehension Test was created to highlight deficits in auditory comprehension. Created to be
a comprehensive assessment of auditory comprehension, the measure incorporates most of the previously existing
methods of assessment, including asking the examinee to answer questions, point to stimuli, and engage in a paperfolding task. The NAB Auditory Comprehension Test includes six subtests, requiring the examinee to perform various
one- to four-step commands; answer questions pertaining to the concepts of before/after, above/below, and right/left;
point to and identify body parts; and answer yes/no questions.
The test can be completed in approximately 10-15 minutes, has an equivalent form available, and offers a multi-method
approach to assessing auditory comprehension deficits.
• The detailed Record Form guides examiners through the measure. The Record Form, tear-off Stimulus Pad, and Panel Cards
are all that is necessary for administration, allowing optimal portability and flexibility in a variety of evaluation settings.
• Two equivalent, parallel forms allow for ease of retesting and reduce the likelihood of practice effects.

NAB® Orientation Test™
Robert A. Stern, PhD and Travis White, PhD
The NAB Orientation Test
measures orientation to self,
time, place, and situation.
Purpose: Assesses impaired
orientation
Age: 18-97 years
Admin: Individual
Time: 10 minutes
The NAB Orientation Test evaluates impaired orientation, one of the most common symptoms of a variety of brain
disorders and an important aspect of attention. A brief 16-item measure, the test consists of questions relating to self,
time, place, and situation. Scoring for the NAB Orientation Test was designed to be simple and reliable while simultaneously providing sensitive markers to help you determine if further examination within a specific domain of disorientation
is needed. A Record Form conveniently provides all the materials needed to administer and score the instrument.
Although the measure includes questions regarding orientation to time and place that are found in most mental status
instruments, the NAB Orientation Test has the distinct advantage of being co-normed with the full Neuropsychological
Assessment Battery. Additionally, unlike similar measures that provide only one overall score for orientation, the NAB
Orientation Test provides four descriptive scores for each facet of orientation (self, place, time, and situation).
• The detailed Record Form guides examiners through the measure and provides optimum portability.
• Excellent for use as a screening measure prior to further assessment, the NAB Orientation Test can be used in a variety of
settings to quickly assess disorientation.

“The NAB is an extraordinary effort.
“The NAB is an extraordinary effort. This scrupulously normed neuropsychological
instrument gives 33 entirely new, alternate-form tests to the clinical and research
community. The NAB can be used as a screening battery, fixed battery, or flexible
battery or by the individual test. Modules that assess attention, memory, language,
executive functions, and visuospatial abilities are cleverly designed, easy to administer, and (using the computer program) easy to score. The Screening Module alone
is a major contribution with no real competition. A complete set of NAB modules
for a single administration fits into a briefcase. Although the NAB breaks no new
conceptual ground in brain-behavior assessment, it provides a set of reliable, valid
alternate-form instruments with which to begin the new neuropsychological century.
The developers of the NAB are to be congratulated for their audacious and successful contribution to neuropsychological assessment.”
—Hartman, D. E. (2006). “The weight is over”: A review of the R. A. Stern and T. White,
Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (NAB). Applied Neuropsychology, 13, 58-61.
