We support people touched by breast and ovarian cancer

Letter from
the Board
Dear Friends,
It is our pleasure to share with you Bay Area Cancer Connections’ Report for Fiscal Year 2014.
As you will see in the following pages, BCC remains true to the core values upon which we
were founded, while working continually to evolve. Adding to our more than 20 years of
service to those facing breast cancer, last year we successfully expanded our programs and
services to include those facing ovarian cancer. We wish to personally thank each of you who
supported BCC during this important growth.
We are pleased to report that we have introduced an Ovarian Cancer Buddy Support Group
and a Hereditary Cancer Support Group, where clients can share coping strategies and
make new friends in a warm and compassionate setting. We currently have 18 new Ovarian
Cancer Buddies who are able to offer one-on-one emotional support and a valuable
perspective to newly diagnosed clients. Additionally, we have expanded our resource
library to include a variety of books, videos, and other materials concerning ovarian cancer,
nutrition, and complementary therapies.
With the support of 1,711 donors and 369 volunteers, BCC served more than 1,846 people
across 14 counties of the San Francisco Bay Area last year. BCC has been successful raising
funding from committed individuals and leading organizations in the local community, as
well as building key partnerships with health care professionals. From the awareness BCC
generates we are able to help more individuals and families through the uncertainties of
cancer.
Although our name has changed, our mission and guiding principles remain the same. We
believe that no one should face cancer alone. Through more than 40 programs and services,
we provide support at every step of each client’s journey, and we are committed to providing
all of our services free of charge.
On behalf of our clients, we thank you for your loyal friendship and continued support of
Bay Area Cancer Connections. You are making a difference!
Sincerely,
Karen Nelson

Ovarian Cancer
Support
This past year, a critical part of our expansion to ovarian
cancer was listening to the needs of people touched by the
disease. We learned ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at
later stages and newly diagnosed clients want an immediate
connection with others who share similar experiences. Our
top priority became providing emotional support to these
new clients.
We’re happy to report that we have over 18 Ovarian Cancer
Buddies who provide meaningful one-on-one peer support.
We have added an Ovarian Cancer Support Group and a
Hereditary Cancer Support Group. In addition to emotional
support, we provide high-quality medical information and
practical help though our Medical Information Services and
expanded resource library.
As these women inspire each other, their strength and
courage inspire us to continue our efforts to meet the needs
of the ovarian cancer community.
“BCC gave me my first
opportunity to meet with
other women who are
ovarian cancer survivors!
These meetings continue
to be an exhilarating,
powerful, and healing
experience.” — Sandy
“When I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer BCC became
my go to place for information –everything from checking
out books, taking a nutrition seminar, life coaching
and most importantly the Healing and Guided Imagery
sessions. BCC staff were always compassionate and warm
to me. In the maze of chaos BCC offered hope and a place
where I felt safe. Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to
be an Ovarian Cancer Buddy.” — Jo Anne

MEET ADRIANA
A
driana, 39, was living alone and working
part-time in San Jose when she noticed that her
breast was continuously causing her discomfort
and one of her nipples looked inverted. After
visiting a local clinic, she was referred to BCC’s
Gabriella Patser Program to help pay for the
essential tests she could not afford. Donaji
Olivares, Patser Program Coordinator, became
her advocate and immediately connected her
with one of our partnering breast surgeons. In
addition to setting up financial aid for Adriana’s
mammogram, ultrasound, and core biopsy, Donaji
provided emotional support and help navigating
the medical system. Adriana was diagnosed with
invasive ductal carcinoma, stage II.
How has BCC helped you?
Thanks to the program, I was able to see the
doctor who found my cancer. My appointment
was scheduled very fast and I felt they really cared
about me. Donaji even went to my appointments
with me. Once I had been diagnosed, the Patser
Program helped me get enrolled in the treatment
program at a hospital that is close to my home.
I remember my clinic in San Jose was very
confused on what to do and Donaji helped
them get me in.
How are you feeling today? Has your outlook
on life changed?
I feel scared because I just had my first chemo and
I don’t know how my body will react and how it
will affect everything in my life. I now appreciate
my family more and wish I had more people
around me. I moved in with my uncle and my
cousin and I’m very grateful to have them in my
life right now. I just want to get through this and
keep moving forward.
Why should people support BCC and the Patser
Program?
I don’t have health insurance and without the
program I wouldn’t have been able to get my
breast checked and find my cancer in time.
Donaji has told me that the organization has other
programs that I can use, now that I have been
diagnosed, and I’m very happy that there is a place
like this where I can get help.

Volunteer of the Year
What’s it like volunteering
as a Helpliner?
Being a Helpliner is super! I love being able to help
women, who have just been hit with the devastating
news, process their diagnosis of breast or ovarian
cancer. More times than not, my initial conversation
with a new client focuses on helping her narrow
down what she needs to do first, so that she can
tackle the battle ahead of her in a controlled and
rational manner. Sometimes this means referring
her to our Medical Information staff for help in
better understanding her pathology. Other times it
may mean referring her to one of our therapists or
support groups. Often, the client may simply need to
talk and be heard. It is very fulfilling to know that I
can often help our client begin the journey back
to good health.
What keeps you coming
back to volunteer?
I keep coming back as a BCC volunteer because
of the wonderful people! In my 35 years as a Human
Resources professional, I never encountered such
a fantastic group. The staff and volunteers alike
are the most dedicated, sensitive people I have
ever worked with. Our clients who have been
diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer are very
generous and brave women. Even in the face of
sometimes devastating medical problems, they
graciously volunteer to help others and demonstrate
a positive attitude.

Planning
When it came time to find and design a new space for Bay Area Cancer
Connections, we turned to the wonderful people who helped us make
390 Cambridge Avenue feel like home in 2006 – Amy Delson, Principal
of Strategic Facilities Planning, and Rich Kirchner Principal of Hawley
Peterson Snyder.
As a past client of BCC, Amy knows firsthand what our clients need to
make them feel comfortable during their cancer journey. She partnered
with Rich and designer Faith Chien—and together they embarked on
creating a new home that would retain the welcoming feel of our old
space, but allow us to expand our programming to include both breast and
ovarian cancer clients. After a long search, we found a space just two blocks
from our old location, which they transformed into the beautiful new
BCC. We cannot possibly express our gratitude for the countless pro bono
hours they spent making sure our clients would have a safe haven to visit.
But they didn’t stop at design. Through their connections, we received
refreshed furniture from Safeway’s Corporate Offices; complimentary
relocation services from MHS and Associates, Corovan, and Nor-Cal
Moving; and beautiful casework donated by Mission Bell for our new
Boutique, which we have stocked with free wigs, hats, prosthetics, and
garments for our clients.
If you haven’t already, come visit us in our new home to see the exciting
results of this great team. A huge BCC thank you to Amy, Rich, Faith, and
the team at Hawley Peterson Snyder for making our new house a home.

MEET BECKY
S
hortly after my husband and I relocated to
the Bay Area I was diagnosed with breast cancer,
which made making new friends even harder.
Feeling lost, I was relieved to find a community
resource like Bay Area Cancer Connections.
For me, the most useful BCC program has been
the Newly Diagnosed and In-Treatment Support
Group. At first, it was hard to go someplace and
have to say out loud that I have cancer, but it was
the best thing I did. The support group made
it easier to talk about my cancer—it gave me a
safe space to say it out loud, but also a place to
talk about it where they understood the cancer
language. The weekly support group has kept me
grounded throughout my treatment. I’ve met some
pretty spectacular women through that group—who
encouraged me when I needed it—and shared in
some of the tough times as well as the better times.
What has been particularly interesting is that I see
myself transitioning in the group. For so long, I was
the one learning in the group; now I find myself
17
being the one who is sharing my story to help
others. I now have experience with chemo and can
provide tips to women who are just starting. It is an
empowering transition. I’m grateful to have found
BCC and made so many meaningful connections
with other women.
“For so long, I was the one
learning in the group; now I
find myself being the one who is
sharing my story to help others.”
I also found the Comfort Tote to be very useful. It
gave me something to bring to my appointments
and to chemo. I had my “cancer bag” with all
the stuff I needed to ensure I was comfortable
at appointments. I added things like my favorite
teas, healthy snacks, and various creams. It
was just such a nice feeling to read the notes of
encouragement and know that someone out there
was sending some unconditional love my way.
