MD (ORAL PATHOLOGY) PART 11 EXAMINATION
FORMAT OF THE EXAMINATION & SCHEME OF MARKING
The examination shall consist of –
C1. Theory
C2. Practicals
C3. Viva Voce
C1. THEORY (ESSAY Paper) (Forty percent of the total marks of the examination)
This shall be a three hour essay paper to evaluate knowledge in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology.
The paper shall consist of five (5) questions, four (4) questions to be answered. Each question
shall be marked out of 100 and carry equal weightage. Each question shall be independently
marked by three examiners. The final mark shall be the average of the marks of the three
examiners.
C2. PRACTICAL (Fifty percent of the total marks of the examination)
Practical examination is aimed to evaluate technical and diagnostic skills and consists of the
following components.
C2.1
Short cases (20 histopathological slides. The candidate is expected to write histopathology
reports) : 2 hours duration (Twenty percent of the total marks of the examination)
C2.2
Long cases (10 cases with histopathology slides and other back up investigations and the
candidate is expected to write a histopathology report with the diagnosis or differential
diagnosis) : 2 hours duration. (Twenty percent of the total marks of the examination)
C2.3
Practical examination to evaluate technical skills (The candidate is expected to perform a
procedure in order to evaluate technical skills): 1 hour duration. (Ten percent of the total
marks of the examination)
All three components (C2.1, C2.2 and C2.3) shall be independently marked by three examiners.
The final mark shall be the average of the marks of the three examiners.
C3. VIVA VOCE – (Ten percent of the total marks of the examination)
Candidates shall be examined for 30 minutes by a panel of two examiners and the final mark shall
be decided by consensus between the two examiners.

Requirements to pass the examination
Overall pass mark shall be 60% or above with a minimum of 50% for C1 and a minimum of
50% for C2.
A candidate who fails the examination will have to sit for all 3 components at the next
examination.
