REAL TO REEL: LATIN AMERICAN FILM AND SOCIAL CHANGE:
Democracy and the Media
We will be screening a selection of rarely shown documentaries and
fiction films focusing on democratic processes and challenges in Latin
America. Unless otherwise noted, all films are subtitled or spoken in
English.
Screenings are free and take place every
Tuesday at 07:10 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. in WATKINS 1000
All are welcome. Watkins 1000 is a nice “theater” with comfortable seats.

10/2 The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (2003, 74 min). Award-winning
documentary by Irish filmmakers Kim Bartley & Donnacha O Briain about
the failed 2002 Coup in Venezuela.
10/9 State of Fear (2005, 94 min.) Documentary about the Peruvian war
against the Maoist guerilla organization Shining Path and the subsequent
rule of Alberto Fujimori in the 1990s based on findings by the Peruvian Truth
Commission.
10/16 Grissinopoli. La nueva esperanza (2004, 25 min.) produced by
Argentina A4 films, and The Take (2004, 90 min.), by award winning
Canadian filmmakers Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein, are both documentaries
on workers’ take-over of factories in the wake of the Argentine political
and economic crisis of 2002.
10/23 Chuquiago (1977, 90 min). Fiction film by Bolivan filmmaker Antonio
Eguino that explores race and class conflict in Bolivia.
10/30 Achacachi (30 min.) is a documentary short on the Aymara uprising
of XXX. It is in Spanish without subtitles. Venciendo el Miedo (2005, 50 min.)
is a fiction video that explores forms of Aymara governance in light of
racial tensions and feminist debates. Venciendo el Miedo is made by a
collective of indigenous filmmakers (CEFREC-CAIB) and is not distributed
commercially. Achacachi was made with the participation of the same
collective. In Spanish and Aymara without English subtitles.
11/6 La Nación Clandestina (1989, 90 min.) is a fiction film by Bolivia’s most
famous filmmaker Jorge Sanjines. This film is not commercially distributed.
It engages the growing indigenous movement in Bolivia that seeks to
strengthen indigenous identity. A social movement that is key in the
election of Evo Morales to the Bolivian presidency in 2005.
11/13 Caracoles (2003, 42 min.) is a documentary on democratic
processes in the Zapatista controlled areas of Chiapas. It was made by
the Chiapas Media Collective. Los últimos zapatistas (70 min.) is a
documentary based on the testimonies of surviving soldiers from the
Mexican revolution.
11/20 A Place Called Chiapas (90 min.). A German-made documentary
on the Chiapas Uprising.
11/27 Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad (93 min.), a documentary on the
Oaxaca protests and their violent oppression by the State. The film
highlights the role of alternative media in organizing the protests.
12/4 La Ley de Herodes (2000). A fiction film that explores the possibilities
of overcoming corruption in a rural town government. The film is an
allegorical critique of the Mexican political system under the PRI that has
lost none of its relevance.
