Biology
Biologists are scientists who investigate and study life and the living habits of animals and plants.
Biologists study the reasons for the way in which animals and plants live and thrive, what helps
them grow and become healthy and what harms them. A biologist investigates the way things grow
and where they live to learn what we can use from the animal and plant worlds to help us.
Biology as a Major at Notre Dame College
Notre Dame College offers two biology degrees: Bachelor of
Science and Bachelor of Arts. The B.S. program is designed
to prepare the student for advanced studies in medicine, podiatry, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or graduate studies and
research.
The B.A. program is designed for those students who plan
careers in business, secondary education, technical support, or
other areas that relate to the Biological Sciences. It is not intended for students planning to enroll in graduate or professional programs in the Biological Sciences or related areas.

“My work as a wildlife biologist has given me the opportunity to directly manage wildlife populations, restore populations of species—like giant Canada geese and wild turkey— back to the Iowa landscape, and preserve vital wildlife habitat that will ensure
future generations the opportunity to see and hunt the wildlife that have been an integral part of my life.” —Richard A. Bishop,
Wildlife Bureau Chief, Iowa Dept of Natural Resources, Des Moines, Iowa
