Adult Education classes are intended for people who live in Lake
County. They are not appropriate for students with B1, B2, F1, F2, J1 or
J2 visas, nor are they appropriate for short-term visitors to the U.S.

degree or career certificate program.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Class offerings, times and locations may vary
and are dependent on enrollment.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) includes classes for real-life application
in reading, writing and mathematics for students who have not
completed a high school diploma. Several levels of adult basic
education classes are offered at different days, times and locations.
Scores on the placement test will determine the student’s level.
How to apply: New students must fill out a Student Information
Form and take a placement test. To apply in person and make
an appointment for the placement test, visit the Grayslake
or Lakeshore campuses during intake hours. Students may
also fill out the Student Information Form online at
www.clcillinois.edu/apply. After obtaining a CLC student
ID number, please call (847) 543-2445 or go to

to request a placement test.

GED Preparation offered
in English and Spanish
Class offerings, times and locations may vary and are
dependent on enrollment.
GED preparation classes prepare students to take the high school
equivalency exam. Students progress at their own rate in reading
comprehension, grammar and punctuation, graph and chart
interpretation, essay writing and mathematics. Scores on a
placement test will determine which class each student will attend.
Special GED test regulations apply to students under the age of 18.

The College of Lake County Adult Education Department is now
offering the GED program online. The fall semester will begin
September 8. Students who are interested in taking the free
online class must meet the following requirements:

GED Exams in Spanish
All GED Subject exams are now administered on computer. All GED
Subject exams, as well as the U.S./Illinois Constitution test, are
available in Spanish Language versions.
General Information
for all GED Examinees
Registration: Registration for all GED Subject exams is done online,
via the GED Registration web site: www.ged.com.
Students wishing to register for GED Subject exams need to create a
MyGED Account and pay all testing fees at the time of online
registration. The registration fee for all GED Subject exams
is $30 per exam.
Students need to pass all four GED Subject exams, as well as the
U.S./Illinois Constitution test in order to receive an Illinois GED
Certificate. The U.S./Illinois Constitution test is offered free of
charge, on a walk-in basis, at Grayslake and Lakeshore Testing
Centers. Results of all GED Subject exams are available online, via
the student’s MyGED Account. Results of US/Illinois Constitution test
are available at the Testing Center, upon completion of the test.
Identification requirements: Any Illinois resident may take GED
Subject exams at any Illinois GED Testing Site. When you arrive for
testing, you will be required to present a government-issued photo-ID
(such as an Illinois Driver’s License or Illinois State ID) showing a
current Illinois address. Contact any GED Testing Site for further
information on other acceptable forms of government-issued
identification.
Payment: Testing fees for GED Subject exams are paid online at the
time of registration. The fee is $30 per exam.
The fee for issuance of a GED Certificate is $10. The fee for an
Official GED Transcript is $3. Students must contact the Lake
County Regional Office of Education (ROE) to request issuance
of a GED Certificate or Official Transcript. Call Lake County ROE

Minimum age: Contact the GED Testing Center for specific minimum
age requirements, particularly for those under age 18.
GED testing will take place only when CLC classes are in session.

Volunteers Needed
Lend a helping hand. Join the College of Lake County and the
Literacy Volunteers of Lake County in providing tutoring services to
adults needing help with reading, writing, math or improving their
English language skills. Formal training provided. Tutors work with
students one on one and in small groups at extension sites or in

Repatriate Program
This program provides learning opportunities for adult students
with a criminal past in Lake County, Illinois. to transition back into
society sucessfully. Call (847) 543-2865 for assistance.
English as a Second Language
(ESL) Classes / Tuition Free
Class offerings, times and locations may vary and are
dependent on enrollment.
English as a Second Language classes are being offered at several
sites and times on various days. Scores on the ESL placement test
will determine the student’s level. Six levels (low and high;
beginning, intermediate and advanced) of English as a Second
Language will be offered.

Beginning ESL
For students who have little or no knowledge of English. This level
teaches students to speak, read and write using basic vocabulary to
describe themselves and their environment.
Intermediate ESL
Support for Career and Technical Programs
For students who can speak and write about themselves and their
environment using basic vocabulary and structures. They will expand
their vocabulary and knowledge of structures and practice using
them in everyday situations.
The Carl Perkins free Supported Career Programs offers academic
support in the areas of Administrative Office Systems, Automotive, and
HVAC. Students in these certificate programs may receive assistance in
the form of in-class tutoring, additional academic support classes and
career assistance upon certificate completion. These classes are for
people not meeting College Reading and Writing Readiness. Class
times will vary.
Advanced ESL
Students will strengthen and refine their use of structures learned
previously and learn new structures and vocabulary. Students will
practice conversation, listening comprehension, reading for
meaning and paragraph writing.

Eligibility
Adult Education classes are intended for people who live in Lake
County. They are not appropriate for students with B1, B2, F1, F2, J1
or J2 visas, nor are they appropriate for short-term visitors to the U.S.
In general, students must be at least 18 years old in order to enroll in
adult education classes. However, 16 and 17-year olds may register
with an official Secondary School Reference Form signed by their
local high school authorized representative.
Students must attend an orientation session before scheduling a
placement test and attending class.
U.S. high school graduates and 16-year-olds must meet additional
eligibility requirements.

GED Graduation:
GED Examination is available at the Testing Center in the Library,
first floor of the Library at the Grayslake campus. For information
call (847) 543-2076.
A GED graduation ceremony will be held in mid-May
for any Lake County resident who passes the GED Examination
and meets all requirements for a GED.
GED testing is also available at the Lakeshore Campus
(111 North Genesee Street, Waukegan) in the Learning Assistance
Center, Room N203. For information call (847) 543-2120.
U.S. Constitution Test is required.
The Adult Education program is funded in part by grants from the
federal government representing 28 percent of the total cost of
the program.
