Using OWL Review Materials Online
Do you want more graded study questions? Many tutorials and practice questions that will help you study for exams
and homework assignments are available in an online system called OWL that is keyed to the printed textbook. You
will have free access to OWL for this semester so that you can use the resources. (In return, we ask that you provide
feedback about OWL—see the last paragraph below.)
To begin using the resources you will need to register with OWL. To do this, go to this URL
https://owl.cengage.com/owl-c/register/owlmgr.cgi?Mode=2&ArchivedDatabaseID=193&CategoryID=74.
(This site is specific to UW-Madison.) Click the arrow labeled Student Registration. Then choose Chemistry 109,
Fall 2012. (Both Prof. Moore’s and Prof. Keutsch’s students can use this site. No data will be recorded or used for
grades, so it doesn’t matter which lecture you are in.)
You will be asked to fill out a form that requests your name and student number. There is also a space where you can
create your own login ID and password. You will need to provide your @wisc email address and a telephone number.
Just click the box labeled “Use 150-day free trial (for new registrations only).” and you will not need an access code.
Then click CONTINUE.
You will be asked to confirm the information you entered. If it is all OK, click CONTINUE.
You will be told that your license allows you to use OWL for 150 days and you should review and accept their
licensing agreement. Review the information and then click I AGREE (unless you don’t want to use OWL).
Be sure to record your login ID and your password so you can use them later.
Go to the OWL login page using the link on the page that appears once you have agreed to the
OWL license. On the login page you need to hover the mouse over General Chemistry and choose
Log In. Then scroll down until you see the cover of the Chem 109 textbook and click on it.
Scroll nearly to the bottom of the screen and choose UW-Madison. Then click on the arrow below
User Login Page. You should now be able to use your login ID and password to log into the Chem
109 course.
Once you are logged into the course, choose Assignment List from the left side-bar and you should see a long list of
assignments. These are keyed to the chapters in Chemistry: The Molecular Science. For example, all of the OWL
material related to Chapter 7 in the book begins with a number 7. Material from Section 7.1: Electromagnetic
Radiation and Matter has the number 7.1 in front of it.
There are several types of assignments: tutorials (TUT), questions (MAS), visual questions (VIS), end-of-chapter
questions (EOC), and homework assignments that parallel the homework assignments in Moodle. You can work on
any or all of these. The OWL system may give you a score, but the scores will not be used to assign grades in Chem
109, so you can ignore any scores you are assigned.
We recommend that you use this system to review any topics or concepts you are having trouble with. For example, if
you had trouble answering questions on the review homework that had to do with electron configurations of
transition-metal ions, that material is covered in Chapter 7, Section 8: Ion Electron Configurations in the book. Thus
you should try any of the assignments in OWL that begin with 7.8.
Professor Moore is currently working to enhance the OWL system by adding new questions and tutorials and by
improving the questions and tutorials that are already there. If you have any comments or questions about OWL, send
them to jwmoore@chem.wisc.edu. Please put 109-OWL at the beginning of the subject line of your email. Your help
will be appreciated.
